30: Visitor

I am running through the jungle, so fast it doesn't feel like my feet ever touch the ground. The world blurs by, green and brown, seen through human eyes. There is bright light ahead. I race towards it feeling claustrophobic, confined by the greenery.

I break through the tree line and stop. I am naked and I feel completely human. I raise my arm to shade the blinding sun, a complete contrast to the forest I just escaped. I am in a large open court yard, gray cobble stones under my feet. I am shivering and alone but I know this place well.

I walk to the fountain at the center of Volterra and share at my reflection, something I did almost every day for months.

I am afraid by what I see this time. Eyes bright red, teeth pointed like garish plastic Halloween fangs. Red liquid drips from my mouth coloring the water red and my reflection smiles. I back away ad into the arms of a faceless statue that glitters in the sun. I am suddenly surrounded by them; tall and menacing. An animal snarl rises from my throat.

'Mikenna' My name is being called but it is separate from my surroundings. 'Mikenna' this voice is honey and warmth and feels more real than what I see.

'Mikenna wake up.' That makes sense, I'm asleep. I opened my eyes lying in bed next to Jacob.

"I'm up. I'm up" I mumbled. Jacob rolled towards me and flung his arm across my stomach.

'Mikenna, can you hear me?'

I realized I had answered out loud instead of mentally. 'Yes Edward, I can hear you. What's up?' I looked over at the clock on our night stand. 3:53 AM in bright red numbers. I made a mental note to get a clock with green or blue numbers.

'Sorry to bother you but you need to get here as soon as possible with Jacob.' I could hear the worry in his thoughts.

'We're coming.' I nudged Jake and tried to sit up but he pulled me back down.

"Chief get up." I threw his arm off and rolled off the bed before he could surround me again. "We have to go to the Cullens' now. Something's going on"

"What's wrong?" he asked looking for clothes.

"I'm not sure yet." 'What's wrong Edward?'

'Nothing yet, we have some time.'

'You're being cryptic. What is it?'

'They're coming back. The Volturi are on their way?'

"No time for pants Jacob. We're running."

We made it to the Cullens' before 4 AM

Alice had a vision. The Volturi and the full guard were already in North America. They had been here for some weeks but just decided to make a trip to Washington. They would be in Forks by the next afternoon.

Everything was still except Jacob's leg that bounced nervously next to mine. Alice stood still tracking the group's progress and searching for different outcomes. Edward stood next to her looking through her thoughts. Esme and Carlisle sat on the couch staring straight ahead grasping each other's hands. Rosalie stood at the back window waiting for Jasper and Emmett to return. Bella was at her house with a sleeping Renesmee.

I was calm and unafraid. After spending time in Volterra the Volturi were creepy but not threatening. I knew the guard could be terrifying when they wanted but they had never turned on me. The only one I had a problem with Jane. She hated me, more than most, because her special talent had no effect on me and Caius liked me a little more than anyone else.
