Staring down at the counter, I'm unable to move from where I stand. Millions of thoughts race through my mine from one little stick. Was I happy? Scared? Sad? Excited? The pregnancy stick has two very clear lines and Ben is the only person I've been with.
I walk back to the bedroom and sit on the bed. I stare at my cellphone trying to decide who I want to tell first. I scroll between the four people in my phone.
Chris is a wonderful man that I just started dating after the whole mess at Megan's wedding. He is sweet and kind, but now I need to tell him that I'm pregnant with another's man's child.
Alex would be on the first plane to New York, and I didn't know if that would be the best thing either. My best friend is starting to smother me to death with his consistent checking in, he knew I wasn't handling life well at the moment.
Megan just started talking to me again after the scene I caused at her wedding a couple weeks earlier. I don't blame her a bit, I would never talk to me again. We were still on shaky ground, but she was willing to forgive and move on.
And then we come to Ben, the father of this unborn child. The man that picks his revenge over me. I had promised that I would never speak to him again, but he needs to know that he's going to be a father. I will never keep that from him.
Can you call me when you have a free moment? I really need to talk to you.
I punch the text message, send, and wait.
My body covers with goosebumps. I grab the huge blanket at the end of my bed and cover my body tightly. Turning on the television, I hope for a distraction for my busy brain, but it doesn't help. It goes crazy with all the things I need to do - doctor's appointments, nursery, daycare, how to be a single mom. It is all overwhelming.
I jump an inch off the bed when my cellphone rings.
"Hello." I answer breathless.
"What's wrong?" Megan asks me.
"How fast do you think you can get to my house?"
Without a pause, "on my way." She says before hanging up.
Twenty-six minutes later, Megan is pounding her fist on my front door, and I quickly hurry to the door before my older neighbors call the police.
Opening the front door, she pushes her way in and walks passed me. She starts walking through each room looking for something. Shaking my head at her, I close the door and sit down on the couch.
"What are you doing?"
"Um, looking for my brother. When you get that high pitched panic in your voice, it's usually something that Ben caused." She shouts back.
Rolling my eyes, I stand and go in search of her. I find her in my kitchen. Quickly, I grab her by the arm and lead her into my bathroom. Megan looks down at the white stick on my black countertop. She doesn't touch it, but studies it closely.
"Ben's not here, but a part of him is."
She looks at me with huge eyes. "This is Ben's?"
"Of course it is. Who else do you think it would be?" I ask her.
"Chris."
"We just started dating. I'm not a slut that sleeps around. I usually wait a couple months before sleeping with someone." I share.
"This will be an awkward conversion to have." She grins at me.
"You're not helping. I just thought I was stressed and that's why I missed my period, but then I realized that I actually missed two. My boob hurt, I'm sick at night, and my clothes are getting tightly. Why didn't I think of this?"
