40: Run

On the sidewalk in front of Chris's apartment, I try waving four different cabs down, all of them ignoring me and speeding past. I give up and start walking up the dimly lit street. My condo isn't that far from his place. I will get there faster walking than try to wait for a taxi to stop.

Chris's street is a busy one in the city, which makes me feel a bit safer, but there is always a little bit of fear when it came to the dark. I reach my hand into my purse and wrap it around the mace I carry for such occasions.

The walk was going okay until I feel someone walking behind me. I walk faster, they start walking faster. Fear courses throughout my body as I pick up speed. I see the dark alley coming up on my left, I almost start screaming for help.

This is how I die.

I let my guard down and did something stupid like walk home. My mind starts racing with who it can be. Would it be Allen, he will have fun torturing me. Would it be Mickey, something tells me that my death wouldn't be quick and painless.

The stranger struck from behind quickly. I lose my grip on the mace and start screaming, but a large hand covers my mouth. An arm snakes around my waist and lifts me easily from the ground. We are heading right for the dark alley.

How long will my body lie there before I'm found.

I start kicking my legs and try to wiggle out of the strong hold. I wasn't going to go down without a fight. My legs swing beneath me, and I connect with a leg.

"Stop." A voice says behind me. "You shouldn't be walking alone. EVER! We talked about this." His thick Boston accent rings next to me ear.

My heart leaps to my throat and I stop kicking.

Ben!

My Ben is here and holding me in his strong arms. I start wiggling again. I want to be free, so I can turn around and see him. I need to see his eyes, taste his lips, and rest my head on his strong chest.

"I will let you down if you promise to not yell or run from me." He whispers.

I nod and he sets me on my feet. I spin quickly to face him, but gasp at the person staring back at me. Ben's hair is very long, his face is covered in long facial hair, and his nose is bigger and much fuller.

His eyes are still the bright blue and smiling at me.

My heart sings with recognition - he is here under all the hair and extra weight.

Quickly, I wrap my arms around his larger body and hug him to me tightly. I don't want to let him go for fear that he will disappear again.

Ben brings his lips to my forehead, and we stay this way for some time. Tucked deep in the shadows of the alley, I feel the safest I have in years.

"Let's get you home." He whispers on my skin before bringing his lips to mine.

I melt with the connection. I feel everything in my body warming and finding life again. I don't want the kiss to stop, but he pulls away to look at me.

"Come with me." I beg.

Ben doesn't say anything instead he walks back towards the street and hails me a cab. I watch from the shadows as a cab stops for him and he looks back at me. Slowly, I emerge from the shadows, shaking my head at the waiting cab. I wasn't getting in the car without him.

"No. I'm not going without you." I tell him out of the corner of my mouth.

"Get in the damn cab. I will meet you at your place." He looks at me.
