My first day back at the office is busy. All my female co-workers want to see pictures of the babies. The guys just couldn't stop staring at my enlarged breast. As far as anyone knew, I was out on bedrest and then maternity leave. No one at the office knew the truth.
For the most part, I fall right back into my workload. Within the first couple of weeks, I have tough cases back on my desk. As I read the files, I second guess everything I do now, having children of my own changes things. I didn't like separating families in court, and when the cases were over, I would cry in my office.
Reading my current case, I feel sick. My mind wonders with second thoughts about coming back to New York. Maybe the twins and I should have waited in Vancouver for Ben. I don't want this life anymore. I want to be somewhere safe and happy.
I had been back for three months when my co-worker, Aaron decided that he wanted to set me up on a date. Laughing, I decline and inform him that I have a boyfriend, the father of my children.
"I think you made him up...no one has ever met him." Aaron grins at me.
"I didn't make him up. He's from Boston and a bit of a hothead. I actually fear for your safety once he hears you tried to set me up." I giggling while taking a drink of my water.
My office door flies open, and Ben is standing in the doorway, gasping for air. Aaron pushes the chair away from the front of my desk and stands quickly. I watch with joy as he sizes up my boyfriend, Ben is a monster of muscle and height.
"The dad." I point with a smile, amazed at the timing of his entrance.
The two of us were meeting down the street for lunch, in 30 minutes. I'm not surprised to see him show up here.
"Hi Honey." I smile at him.
He glares at Aaron before looking at me, "grab your shit. You're quitting right now." He demands.
Something is wrong.
Address Aaron, he turns to speak. "You need to get into the conference room with as many people as you can grab. I've told people on my way back here."
"Ben?" I stand from my desk.
"Did you take a case against Marcus Godwin?"
"You know I can't tell you that." I roll my eyes at him.
Ben flashes his badge and Aaron's eyes get huge. "Ally, just answer the damn question for once in your life. Marcus Godwin?"
"No, I didn't. What are you doing here?" I ask him.
"I have the Marcus Godwin's case." Aaron says.
"If you want to stay in one piece grab everyone and get to the conference room. Don't let anyone into the conference room once it's locked. Understand?" He bellows.
He runs from the room and starts shouting for everyone to get into the conference room. The room has no windows and bulletproof for this very reason.
Ben turns his attention back to me. "Marcus is Mickey. Your co-worker is representing his baby's momma, and she is trying to gain full, legal custody of his children and he's not about to let that happen. Mickey is on his way over to stop this firm from taking them."
I shake my head. "He'll never get past our security. We have a protocol for that."
"ALLYSON. Mickey is not going to stop for a couple security guards. He will get up here and he will stop at nothing."
"What? He's going to kill me?" I joke.
"YES." Ben says with wild eyes. "Al told him that you work for this firm and even if it's not you that took his case, it's your head he wants."
