I looked down to see who was calling me, Sapnap. I hadn't talked to him in a bit and I was starting to miss him.
I smiled and accepted the call. "Hey!"
"Hey, Mel." He definitely didn't sound happy.
My smile dropped. "Is something wrong?"
"Uhm... no. It's fine." He was very clearly lying to me.
"Come on, you can tell me what's up." I insisted.
Sapnap let out a short sigh. "It's just... are you avoiding me again?"
My eyebrows bunched in confusion. "What? Why?"
"Well, we haven't talked in a couple days and you stopped responding to me again." He began to explain. "Plus, you promised I could call you yesterday for your birthday, but you just didn't pick up."
Shit. I wasn't forgetting about texting my parents yesterday. I forgot about calling Sapnap. "My phone broke yesterday and I'll be honest with you, I completely blanked on our call in the stress of that."
"Okay." He didn't seem satisfied with that answer. "You didn't respond to my Discord messages either, Mel. I was super worried that you were having a depressive episode again, but then you streamed... while calling people on Discord."
I looked below our call and saw the couple of missed messages from yesterday. "I- I didn't see them." It was the truth, but I wouldn't believe me if I were him. I just sounded guilty, mostly because I did feel guilty about making him worry and then feel unwanted.
He let out a humorless laugh. "Okay. You didn't see them." He sighed again. "Just be honest with me, Mel. We need to talk."
I fucking hated that sentence. I felt my stomach drop at just those four words as I began to get more anxious. "Nick, I'm being honest with you."
He took a deep breath, most likely trying to calm himself down. "Okay. I believe you."
There was a long silence that followed his words before he chose to speak again. "Can I still show you what I made for your birthday?"
"You made me something for my birthday?" I felt a sad smile cross my lips as guilt continued to pool in my stomach.
"Yeah." Sapnap sounded timid about the situation. "It's just on Minecraft. I can send you the IP. Uh, only if you want to."
I frowned at the fact he felt the need to add his last sentence. "Send me the IP."
It only took about two minutes for me to load into the server. I surveyed the spawn point before I was teleported to Sapnap.
"Here it is." He moved his player model to the side so I could see and I swear my heart could've melted.
Stood in front of me was a semi-accurate replica of the house that we originally built together, this time with a roof. I could tell that he really did put effort into it, despite the mistakes that were very obvious to me. I looked over at him in game and smiled. "Nick, this is adorable."
"Look inside!" He encouraged with some of his normal energy returning to his voice.
I walked forward and opened the door to see a cake sitting on a table in the middle of the unfurnished house. "You made me a cake!" I couldn't wipe the growing smile off of my face. "Thank you, seriously, it means a lot."
"Of course." His energy was back now. "I'll be honest, the cake was only added after your stream."
"Took some inspiration, huh?" I teased.
