Nick was still asleep when I woke up the next morning, so I carefully untangled our limbs so that I could go to the kitchen to get water. We'd fallen asleep pretty late since Bea called. I took my phone from the nightstand and shoved it into the hoodie's pocket as I left the room. I tried my best to make the least amount of noise possible.
I regretted not packing a second pair of sweatpants. Dream kept the house way too cold. I at least had the hoodie, but my shorts weren't doing anything to help the temperature.
I stopped in my tracks as I looked at the cat sitting on the floor of the kitchen. Patches turned to look at me with wide eyes, tilting her head slightly to the side. I really hadn't seen her at all as she had been sleeping upstairs for most of the time I was awake.
I was about to lean down to greet her when I heard a bowl clinking. That's why she was in the kitchen. "Morning." I greeted Dream before I had fully come into his view.
I saw Dream just in time to see that I had startled him. He seemed to pretend that I hadn't as he started to speak. "Hi. You escaped?"
I snickered. "Yeah. I escaped."
He turned around with a bowl of cat food held in his hands, smiling at me.
I nodded towards the bowl in his hands. "Nice breakfast."
He rolled his eyes as he walked over to where Patches was still sitting patiently. "Oh, yeah. My favorite." He set the bowl down for her and tapped it with his nail to call her over with the sound. "C'mon, breakfast." He spoke much softer as he addressed his cat.
I waited for Patches to go over to her bowl before speaking, in fear of startling her or something of the sort. "Are you always up this early for her?"
"Most days." He stood up from the floor and stretched. "Good to get an 'early' start anyways. Just depends on what schedule I'm on."
I nodded in understanding as I leaned against the counter. "My sleep schedule's just fucked no matter what. Like, most people wouldn't consider this early."
"It's not early." Dream agreed. "You're just weird." He looked down at the hoodie I was wearing and seemed like he was about to say something when his phone started buzzing on the counter. He looked at it, confused, before he glanced at me. "I'm gonna take that call. He'll keep spamming me if I don't." He picked up his phone and answered the call, not leaving the kitchen and instead leaning against the kitchen island.
I turned away from him to try to give him privacy, although it was a bit weird that he didn't leave to go take it. I opened the cabinet beside the fridge to grab a glass.
"Yeah, hi." He started speaking to whoever was on the phone. "I'm with Medusa." He scoffed at whatever the response was. "You do. I know you do."
I tried my best to just ignore him as I filled my glass with water. I didn't want to interrupt whatever conversation he was having. At least it didn't sound serious.
Dream stifled a laugh. "Yeah. That's the one." He listened for a moment before letting out a sigh. "Hey, Medusa?"
I glanced over my shoulder, confused. "Yeah?"
"He's gonna harass me until I let him talk to you." He gave me an exasperated look. "Can I put him on speaker?"
"Sure. Who?" I turned around and took a sip from my water.
"I don't think you know him." He offered very little explanation before putting the phone on speaker. "Joey, you get a singular minute. I'm not subjecting her to any more than that."
