Rafe groaned from beside you as he tossed and turned in his sleep once again. You had never seen him quite so restless before but lately, it had become a bit of a problem.

"Baby? Are you okay?" you whispered into the dimly lit room. You couldn't see much but thanks to the small nightlight, you could tell based on his features that he wasn't having a good time.

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine. I just... never mind," the tired boy sighed before turning over, his back towards you.

"No, Rafe," you started as you sat up a bit and placed a hand on his shoulder, "What's wrong, sweetheart?" He let out another sigh before he turned to lay on his back and his eyes met your own.

"It's the nightlight. I know you can't sleep without it but I can barely sleep with it," he admitted, regretting it immediately when he saw the small sad frown that showed on your lips.

"I'm sorry," you mumbled, pulling your knees up to your chest and hiding your face in them. "I just get scared of the dark. I know it's stupid but it's true," you spoke, your voice muffled by your legs. You felt Rafe's hand on your leg as he slowly rubbed up and down in a comforting manner.

"Hey, look at me," he whispered gently to which you picked your head up just a tad. "It's okay. I get it but you know I'll protect you from anything, right? Nothing that could scare you in the dark would get to you without having to go through me first." You nodded your head while Rafe tugged on your leg slightly and opened his arms. You let a small smile show as you snuggled up to the boy you loved so dearly, his warm strong arms encapsulating you against his body. After a few moments of silence, you decided to speak up.

"Maybe tomorrow night I could try to sleep without it?"

"Really? Are you sure?" he questioned, fully surprised by your suggestion.

"Yeah but you have to protect me," you warned him while cuddling further into his embrace.

"I will always protect you. You're the best thing I've got."
