when wheezie asked if you could help her make homemade cards for her class's holiday card exchange, you immediately said yes. it wasn't like you could ever turn down the small curly-haired brunette. after collecting several craft supplies and looking to the internet for some ideas, you worked alongside her as she made cards for her class and you for your friends.

"i thought you were only making cards for your friends?" wheezie inquired upon seeing you pull out another piece of paper to make another card.

"i am," you stated, unsure where she was going with this.

"well, you've already made one for sarah, john b, jj, pope, and kiara, so if my memory serves me correctly, that's all the friends you have." you loved the girl, but damn if she wasn't brutally honest.

you chuckled lightly. "that's true."

"so..." she dragged out.

"so?"

"so," she started dramatically, "who's that card for?"

"someone."

she wasn't satisfied with your answer. "someone?"

you gave in. "rafe."

"rafe? rafe isn't your friend." your cheeks warmed when you thought about the boy.

"no, he isn't."

"then, why are you making him a card?" she pressed. "if it goes like anything i've ever made him, he'll probably toss it in a week."

"because i want to."

wheezie's lips curved up into a teasing grin. "you like him."

"i do not."

"yeah, you do," she jeered.

a silence settled over the two of you before you spoke. "i'll be right back."

"so you like me?" rafe piped up when you saw him behind the wall you'd just passed. your hand flew to your chest in an attempt to get your heart to settle, but rafe taking a step closer to you only made the organ behave more erratically.

"i- uh-" he'd caught you by surprise and his increasingly closer proximity was making the words die in your throat.

"hey, hey," he began while he slipped his hand up to cup your cheek, "the feeling's mutual, sweetheart."
