"I know, it hurts. I'm so sorry, but we have to get this out," your best friend told you as you winced every time he brushed through your hair with a hairbrush he found in Rose's things. He brought the brush back to the top of your head before bringing it down again to try to tackle the huge knots.

"Wheezie is never allowed to touch my hair again until she's at least seven or eight," you told Rafe as he continued to gently brush through the tangled strands. You had never seen the nine-year-old boy be so gentle and take such care of something before so the sight you were seeing in the reflection of the mirror made your heart swell.

While Rafe played a video game, you had laid on his bed where the three-year-old easily wandered in through the cracked door. You adored little baby Wheezie. She was the cutest thing ever and so giggly. She had a smile all the time and you loved to play with the brown tufts of curls that laid on her head. She found a love for playing with people's hair from you and she would just run her little hand down your hair over and over again. She sat on your back as you laid on your stomach and let her gently pat your hair down if it kept her occupied. The act eventually led you to take a little nap and with Rafe's attention on the tv screen, neither of you noticed the girl tossing and tangling your hair until it was heavily knotted.

"At least we caught it before it got worse," he mumbled while his eyes remained trained on what he was working with before he got the brush caught in your hair again. "I say we should just cut your hair. I think it'd look nice short anyway."

"Rafe, no! Here, just start at the bottom and brush the ends. Then work your way up," you told him. When he pulled the brush out of where it was stuck, it tugged a little harsher than you had anticipated and tears sprung to your eyes as you let out a slight whimper. His wide blue eyes shot to yours in the mirror before he placed the brush down.

"Hey, no no no. I'm sorry. I'm really trying to be gentle here and not hurt you," he whispered before you pulling you into his chest.

"It's okay, Rafe. I can tell you're trying to be gentle and thank you for that. It just hurts and that's not your fault," you mumbled into his shirt before pulling away to look at him. You reached for the brush and handed it to him. "Just brush at the ends like I said and it should be a little easier. I trust you, okay? You can do it."

He was hesitant and let out a sigh before spritzing your hair with some more detangler spray that he had also found in Rose's things and began to brush at the ends of your hair. It was a lot less painful and worked so much better at getting the tangles out. Once he had gotten every knot, he continued to brush through your hair.

"Do you want me to braid it?" the boy asked sweetly and you couldn't say no with how gentle he was treating your locks so you let him. "Let's go back to my room and we can shut the door so Wheezie doesn't stumble in."

"Actually," you started as you hopped down from where you were sitting. "We can let Wheezie in since my hair is up now thanks to you," you told him while pressing your lips to his cheek, watching a light shade of pink dust over his cheeks.

"But then you can't play my game with me," he pouted as he opened the door, little Wheezie waddling your way as her arms opened for you to grab her.

"Yes, we can. She can sit in my lap and play with toys while we play your game, okay?" He nodded before you two sat in front of the tv and got ready to play.

"You're my best friend, you know that right?" Rafe grinned at you as you looked up from situating Wheezie in your lap to meet his eyes.

"Yeah, you're my best friend too."
