"are you ready yet, darling?" rafe called from the other side of the bathroom door that you resided in. you looked at yourself in the mirror, but didn't recognize the girl you saw in it. this wasn't something you were used to. this wasn't your scene nor your attire. but rafe asked you to go with him and his family and considering how little he even liked to mention his family, you felt this was a big step in your relationship and a big step for him.

"um, just one second!" you alerted him before making eye contact with yourself in the mirror. you were a pogue about to walk into the lion's den of all kooks. you were going to one of the biggest kook events of the year with the most widely known kook family. you knew that when pope saw you at midsummers later, he wouldn't be the most overjoyed, but you were doing this for rafe, not yourself.

you shook your head at yourself before letting out a breath. after a few seconds of mentally hyping yourself up, you reached for the door handle to open it. rafe stood by his window, looking out of it as he talked on the phone with topper.

"rafe?" you called and watched rafe turn to look at you, lips parting for a moment before they moved to tell topper he'd talk to him later. walking over to you, he tossed his phone onto his bed and let his hands travel from your shoulders to your hands to hold them.

he stepped backward, bringing you over with him. "come over here, babe, into the light. let me look at you..." he trailed off as his eyes moved up and down your frame. you didn't know if you felt vulnerable from being under his gaze, from being in an outfit you swore you'd never be able to afford to wear, or because you were about to be surrounded by several people who despised you, but rafe noticed the distant look in your eye. "hey," he called, his hand on your cheek bringing your focus to him, "what is it?"

"nothing," you said quickly, but he didn't buy it.

"y/n." his voice was a little more stern so you gave in, voicing your thoughts.

"it's just that... are you sure this is okay? a pogue going to midsummers?"

"you'll be there with me. of course, it's okay and anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't matter," rafe told you, gentle thumb coming up to caress your cheek as his eyes stared into your own.

"even your family?" you added, knowing their approval meant a lot to both you and rafe.

"especially my family," rafe whispered before he surged forward to press his lips on yours. after pulling back, he leaned his forehead against yours, all of his attention directed on you. "all i need is you."
