this one is a soulmate au where your internal voice is the voice of your soulmate's, rather than your own
The voice sounded so familiar. It was definitely someone you had heard before but not in a long time. Frustration filled you every time you tried to decipher who the voice is your head belonged to because it was so similar if not the same as one you've heard previously but your brain couldn't connect the pieces. You tried to push the thoughts to the back of your mind but every inner monologue you had sounded like him.
"Are we almost there?" your little brother asked as you drove onto the bridge.
"Yes bub, look. There's the sign. We will be at grandma's in no time," you told the young one as you pointed to the worn-down sign that alerted you of your arrival to the Outer Banks, a.k.a. paradise on earth. You hadn't been here in a while considering you used to come every summer. Last summer, you went to cheer camp and the sport took over your vacation from school and then the summer before that, you'd been stuck babysitting your neighbor's kids while their parents dealt with a sick family member.
Your brother still managed to go to your grandma's house during those summers and you missed the woman so much. When you pulled into her driveway and saw her sitting on the porch, you rushed to take off your seatbelt and practically ran into her.
"Y/n, baby, I haven't seen you in ages. It's been so long and you've gotten taller. You look so pretty and grown." Your cheeks heated at the compliment as you pulled away from her embrace to let your ecstatic little brother have a turn at hugging her.
"Does Kelce still live next door? I want to surprise him. I told him that I might not make it this summer and I can't wait to see the look on his face," you asked your grandmother. Kelce and you were thick as thieves every summer when you came over. He was your best friend over here and you were so excited to see him.
"Yes honey, he does and he asks about you all the time. Go on. I'm sure he's so excited to see you." You nodded at her, pressing a quick kiss to her cheek before you skipped along to Kelce's house. Up the steps and to the door you went to knock.
"Y/n?" the wide-eyed boy stated in disbelief as you knocked into him, wrapping your arms around his waist.
"Kelce! God, I've missed you so much and you're like a foot taller than me now. We used to be the same height," you mumbled before pulling away from his embrace.
"I can't believe you're here! Are you staying the whole summer?" You nodded to answer his question and before you two could talk anymore, a certain boy with frosted tips peeked his head around the corner.
"Topper Thornton?" you giggled as you walked towards him.
"In the flesh. Y/n, what are you doing here? Kelce said you weren't coming and he's been moping around for the last week about it," Topper informed you while wrapping his arms around you. You were pretty close with Topper as well, seeing as it was hard to find Kelce without Topper and vice versa.
"Top," Kelce groaned as you chuckled against Topper's chest.
"What's going on in here?" Him. That voice. It's the voice that's plagued your mind for quite a while now. Hearing it caused your body to go rigid in Topper's embrace.
"You okay, y/n?" Top questioned when he felt your sudden stiffness.
"Y/n?" the voice spoke again and you turned slowly to meet the worried eyes of Rafe Cameron. How could you be so stupid to not realize that it was his voice in your mind all along? But now you feared that your voice wasn't the one in his head and you were scared to speak. "You good?"
"What's wrong?" Kelce asked while stepping closer to you, placing a hand on your shoulder. "You look like you've seen a ghost. It's just Rafe."
"Say something else," you whispered to Rafe, so low he probably couldn't hear you.
"Um okay, my name is Rafe Cameron. You are y/n y/l/n. We met when we were eleven years old. You met Kelce at six years old and Topper at nine. Your grandma lives next door and you have a younger brother. I have two younger sisters and Wheezie is best friends with your brother," he listed off random things that came to his head.
"Okay, listen to me Rafe, like really listen to me. Does anything about my voice sound familiar to you?" you questioned as you tried to mentally prepare for the heartbreak of not being your soulmate's soulmate.
"Uh, your voice sounds a little deeper but- wait oh shit!" His blue eyes widened while Kelce and Topper shared a look of confusion. "So that stuff is true? You hear me in your head," he basically whispered. You nodded your head before you leaped into the arms of your love. You had always loved Rafe's hugs but now it felt different. It felt complete. It felt like you were supposed to be there and that you'd be there for the rest of your life. And that's exactly what you did.
