Luna's POV

The commander sat on the couch, sipping tea and looking through the files on Calum Chase. The room was illuminated by about 100 candles, since the power was still out from the storm. I watched as she flipped through all of the information I had gathered and let out a small sigh. The Commander only visited on missions when something was wrong. So either I had screwed up or had been wasting my time.

She set the files back on the table and looked at me as if I had just done a spastastic dance or something.

"What?" I asked, quite confused. She stared at me for a few seconds and replied in a thick British accent, much thicker than mine,

"He is so.... normal. I did not expect him to be a... a... regular high school.... jock. That is what you kids say these days right?" I rolled my eyes but nodded. Teenagers lately had used so many stereotypes that it was getting confusing. She continued.

"I mean when our client requested his death I was a bit skeptical, but he offered a generous amount of money so I didn't argue that much. Of course I got as much information out of him as I could but... he wasn't quite clear on the reason. I thought maybe he was part of some bigger thing going on but.... he is sooooo normal." I nodded in agreement again, for I knew I should not interrupt her if she was ranting.

"Do you think you can try to get into his social life outside of school? Like more than you were going to do. Because I have to know why he is so important enough to kill. And since he requested us to kill him, our client must have thought there was some sort of challenge." She looked and me and I knew it was all right to speak.

"I will see. You know all I have found so far and I will alert you of anything suspicious about him as soon as I find it." She sipped her tea and started humming something that supsiciously sounded like "Take Me to Church" by Hozier but I couldn't be sure.

"There is no need to send your findings to headquarters." She stretched out and added to my surprise, "I will live with you for a while." I sat up straight and felt the color draining out of my face.

"You? Here? But... you have a whole society to run and..." My voice faded out and she laughed.

"Luna I have a person who can fill in for me... Actually normally that person is you but still. And I won't be a bother. you will hardly see me. I will just be here to... Analyze. And meet with some old friends."

I raised an eyebrow at that. The way she said "friends" implied that those people were more than friends.

She stood up and stated in an excited voice, "I am going to go to bed. The guest room is upstairs so I will stay there. See you in the morning!" With that, she hopped up the stairs, leaving me gaping after her, alone with only the shadows of the candles to keep me company.

Acting like a giddy teenager was not like the Commander at all, but with her line of work I doubt she had ever really gotten to hang out with people her own age. She was only 21, but had inherited the post of leader after her father was killed by an angry client. We had grown up together, trained and fought, but were never really part of that whole girly teenager giggles-about-everything stage.

She had helped me get over... Him. when he was murdered. It was awful, and destroyed me, but I managed to make it seem like I was all right. From the outside at least. She had been the only one to see I wasn't okay, and she did her best to make me better.

I stood up and waved my hand through the air, trying to extinguish the candles with magic, but I then realized I had drained all of it trying to clean up the mess I had made.

Oh. The man. Right. I probably should have mentioned that to the Commander. I ran upstairs, but when I got to her room she was already sound asleep. It was best to let her, seeing as she was probably jet lagged from traveling to America.

I tiptoed out of her room and back into mine, where Alfie sat in the middle of my bed, sound asleep. The clock on the bedside table showed it was 2:04 in the morning, but I wasn't tired at all. I should have been though, since I threw a party. Oh. Marina and Everest. I hoped they got home safe, but I picked up my phone anyways.

"Hey, you guys get back ok?" I texted Everest, then sat next to Alfie, staring at my screen and waiting for a reply.

After what seemed like ages, my phone lit up and played a short little tune performed on a violin.

"No. We are at 543 Juniper Avenue. Some guy picked us up in his car and won't let us leave. Please come help."

I read over the text twice and jumped up, quickly getting dressed into some black skinny jeans and a tank top, despite the winter air outside. I grabbed two knives and hid them in my boots, then quietly opened the window. I couldn't let the Commander know I was leaving, in case she might follow and mess everything up. The address was only a few short blocks away and I was positive I could get there in less than five minutes by foot.

I jumped out of the window, landing catlike on the bright green, luscious Seattle grass, and tore off into a fast sprint, silent along the road.
