I was eating a sandwich at the hospital cafe with Jackie when I heard the news.
"Rhooo!" I dropped my food when Mark yelled my name from the door opening. He had the most ridiculous smile on his lips. As usual, he screamed from meters away instead of actually walking inside. I tried to ignore the looks everyone gave us.
"He's awake, come on let's go," he yelled through the whole building. My heart skipped a beat and I quickly stood up, this was what I had been waiting for for the last eighteen hours. I threw my ice tea- lemon in Jack's face to wake him up.
"Jordan!" he said when he woke up. "That's right big guy, he's awake," Mark announced. He stood up so quickly from his chair, that he knocked the table over. But I didn't have much time to think about my food-covered clothes, I had to go see my boyfriend.
I peeked through the door, all I saw was the back of a doctor, he completely blocked the view of Jordan.
"Yeah, still a little stingy," I heard him say. Jordan's voice was raspy. I still loved his voice. "It'll probably last for a couple of days," the doctor replied, "just make sure to wear bandages to stop yourself from scratching the wounds." The boy hummed, and I made a mental note to remind him of that. I wanted to walk in, but for some reason, I hesitated. Would he be mad at me? I shook my head, Jordan wouldn't say that out loud, he was too sweet for that.
But what if he was angry at me but too shy to say it?
"Morning," I said softly. The doctor turned around and smiled. "Good day, miss DiLauris. I'll leave you two alone then," he said with a wink. Ew.
I walked in, and the corner of Jordan's mouth turned up. His eyes looked tired, but it was better than a motionless boy like yesterday. "Hey sweetie," I whispered. "You know, my ears aren't actually damaged, you can talk normally," he said with a grin. I chuckled, he was still the same, goofy boy. I sat down on the chair.
"How are you feeling?" His smile faltered, and he looked down at his legs. "Honestly? Pretty terrible. My muscles in my leg hurt, and I'm a second away from cutting the stitches out of my face. My stomach's still numb luckily. I have like a hundred painkillers for my ribs to take every day." I dropped my shoulders, that was not what I had hoped for. Of course, it was predictable, but still.
"The doctors want me to rest, like that is possible with the team around," he sighed, followed by a cough. I took his hands.
"We'll try our best, they're your friends after all." He looked up at me with big eyes. "Really?" I tried to smile at the insecure boy. It wasn't very convincing though. "Of course, they're all our friends. I've told you that before, right?" He only nodded. Jordan wasn't telling me anything about what happened back in that room, but I didn't have the heart to ask him. Then I heard so many footsteps, it was like there was a marathon.
"Jordan!" The whole group tried to run through the small door at the same time, and so they fell. He laughed adorably. I thanked every God in the entire world for that, he was finally feeling a bit better. The rest of the afternoon we went through the stuff we all brought him until the evening fell. Then we convinced the coach to rent us rooms in the hotel nearby. If the tests went well the next morning, we could take him with us.
"Do you think that Jordan is going to be alright?" I asked Sue and Tori that night in our room. "Of course, the doctors said so," Tori answered. "That's not what she means, Rho-Rho means mentally," Sue explained. I was a bit surprised, maybe she was wiser than I thought.
"He was tortured," I whispered, "how can anyone be okay after that? He didn't speak a word about it." Tori turned on the nightlight to look at me. "Look, he went through something terrible. Do you really expect him to give a full report the day he wakes up?" I sighed, she was right and I hated it.
"Okay, just a couple of hallways," Mark said the next day when we were trying to get Jordan to the van. "This wouldn't be so difficult if you just used a wheelchair."
"No." We all sighed at his stubbornness. The former alien tried to walk as casually as possible, but his damaged leg failed him. Every five seconds someone had to catch him, until Kevin supported him with his arms, much against Jordan's will.
Twenty minutes later we finally sat down. Jordan had two seats for himself so he could rest his leg. Jude and I sat in the seats in front of him, and Mark and Nathan behind Jordan.
"How are you feeling?" I asked my boyfriend for the tenth time. He opened one eye to look at me and sighed. "You know, you keep telling me to sleep but it's kind of impossible," he mumbled before closing his eyes again. "Of course," I answered.
The bus wasn't as loud as usual. Not necessarily because of Jordan, but the coach glared at us with the coldest stare I had ever witnessed. And we also kind of wanted to hear Nathan argue with his mom.
"We had no choice, don't you understand? It's not like you would've given me permission."
"Yeah, Dvalin gave us the tip, why?" He asked his mom as if the alien was a normal friend. I giggled.
"Yes, from Epsilon," Nathan told her. Mrs. Swift yelled so loud that even I could hear it. "Okay, I have to go now," he quickly said before hanging up. We all stared at him with the biggest grin, and the blue-haired gave us a glare. "What?"
Just when I had fallen asleep, Jude poked me awake. "Damnit Jude," I mumbled with my eyes still closed. "Wake up Rhona, we're taking a detour," Mark yelled. I opened my eyes to see the captain's excited smile two centimeters away from my face.
"My grandfather had a second notebook, now come on," Mark whined. Now that caught my attention, we were in need of some new moves. Especially in the defense, since we now had Aphrodi as an extra striker. "You think that there are moves in there that could defeat Xavier and his team?" Jordan snorted.
"What?" He turned his face to us, and his eyes had a way too familiar emotionless look.
"You don't know anything about Alius. Whatever comes next is unstoppable I'll tell you that." A silence fell over the bus.
"Oh come on, did you really believe that things are this simple? Xene isn't the only threat." I glanced at Jude, and he was thinking the same thing as me. Jordan was being a bit like Janus. "Then what are the others?" The strategist asked. Jordan just shrugged. "I'm exhausted, we can talk about this another time." Then he put on his headphones and stepped out with us. He never spoke until we found the place we'd stay in. It left a nasty feeling. He went through terrible things, he was probably still frightened. So when he turned off his headphones to talk, I felt relieved.
"Honestly, was this stop really necessary?" When I raised my brows, Jordan narrows his eyes. "Is there a problem?" He never talked to me like this, and it stung a bit. But this wasn't about me, I reminded myself, Jordan was hurt and I had to help him.
"Of course not Sweetie," I said with a smile. Jordan relaxed a bit. "Have you seen my pills?" He desperately turned his bag upside down. I laughed, and so did he. Thank God. "Which one?"
"The one in the purple package. They have a really strong smell, it's sickening." And just like that, he was himself again. Today we weren't going to do anything anymore, I decided. And so we watched Brooklyn 99 on my phone in bed until he fell asleep on my shoulder. I wasn't reassured just yet though, we'd have to wait until tomorrow. Maybe if he slept, he would feel better.
