(Carlton House. The words "DECEMBER 1785" appear. The PRINCE OF WALES is entertaining FOX, SHERIDAN, CAPTAIN PAYNE, LORD LOUGHBOROUGH, LORD STORMONT, the DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE, and several other Whigs. The PRINCE OF WALES seems to be in better health, not completely happy, but enough to function.)
FOX
I tell you, we shall see Hastings found guilty before the new year.
DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE
You must know that is impossible, sir. Not all of the evidence has been presented.
(While the Whigs debate this, PAGE #1 enters without being noticed and hands a letter to the PRINCE OF WALES, then exits. The PRINCE OF WALES nonchalantly opens it, not expecting much. When he realizes who sent it, he becomes excited, sitting forward to read it. The letter has a cathartic effect, and it nearly brings him to tears. He finds inside the envelope the portrait miniature of MRS. FITZHERBERT, which he cherishes before quickly putting it in his pocket. He suddenly stands and begins to leave the room.)
FOX
George?
PRINCE OF WALES
Forgive me, gentlemen, but I must be off.
SHERIDAN
Is all well with you, sir?
PRINCE OF WALES
It is, Sheridan, it is! Please, stay as long as you like; I shan't return until late.
(Before the Whigs can ask more questions, the PRINCE OF WALES has left the room, leaving them confused and concerned. Cut to Scene XV.)
