I'm proposing this weekend so I have lots to plan. I ordered flowers, and had some food arrangements to be done. I scouted out a nice spot with a pretty view, and I even bought a new outfit.
I just went for a run with Dodger and I'm on my way to pick a cake. Knowing Liv I'm probably gonna end up getting a chocolate cake.
I put on my sneakers and coat and get my keys.
"Oh crap I forgot my phone," I go back to my room and find it ringing on my bedside table.
It's an unknown number but I decide to answer it anyways.
"Hello?"
"Hi there, this is Lucy calling from Mass Gen. Is this Christopher Evans?"
"Yeah, Chris is fine."
"Hi Chris, I'm calling because you are Olivia Tomás' emergency contact. We received Olivia in the emergency room a few hours ago, and it seems like she was in a car accident... We did everything we could but she didn't make it. I'm sorry."
"What?"
"Olivia was in a bad car accident, she didn't make it. It seems like she was dead on arrival."
"No."
"If you would like to see her we have her body here. I do advise you come soon."
"I- I don't believe this. This has got to be some sort of joke."
"I'm sorry Mr. Evans, I wish it were."
Anger, confusion. I don't know what to feel. All I know is I need to see her.
"Tell her to hold on, I'll be there soon."
I hang up the phone and run out the door.
I run past two red lights and I still feel like I wasn't driving fast enough. If I had a cop following me I wouldn't know, I was driving so fast everything blurred by. My knuckles turning white as I gripped the steering wheel.
"Liv hold on," a hot tear rolls down my face. "I know you're alive. You have to be."
I leave my car in front of the ER and don't bother staying within the lines. I rush in, looking around for her, for her to pop out of a corner and say "just kidding!". But she doesn't come.
A nurse walks up to the station and I run over, "Excuse me can I see Dr. Tomás? It's urgent."
Her eyes go soft, "I'm so sorry, but Nurse Tomás passed just a few hours ago."
"No, I need to see her," I look around the room, "She's got to be around her somewhere."
Another nurse walks up, "Hi Mr. Evans?"
"Yes that's me."
"I'll take you to her," she says quietly.
I let out a sigh of relief and follow her through the hospital. We keep walking through different halls until I realize we're in the morgue.
"No..." I gasp.
She opens the door and doctor is waiting in there.
"We're here for Tomás," the small nurse says.
"Oh yes," he walks over to a drawer on the metal wall and pulls it out. There was a white sheet covering her body but I can see her hair.
"No," I whisper.
The doctor uncovers her and there she was. Her lips, her face without color. There are little scrapes are on her face. She looks peaceful, as if she's just taking a nap, but when I go touch her cheek it's cold.
