The Moments I Recall

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

"You are a remarkably busy woman miss Reeves. It's hard to track you down, but thank you for taking some time to see me." She says. Her voice is dark and smooth, her yearly announcements still fresh in my mind. It's weird seeing her like this, so close, all her focus is on me. The air in the room is so still, as if each particle has been organised specially. I don't want to raise suspicion, I thought it would be best if she's left for last.

"I would just like to finish up the session by asking if you have any plans for your future?" her silver eyes stare at me intently.

"I would like to be an elementary teacher here in Black Barrow." I tell her.

"You don't want to leave town... maybe for college?" She asks.

"I can't leave, you know that." I say in my head. "I was thinking of attending community college here, I love it here, I love the community." I tell her with a smile. She stares at me for a few seconds, scanning my face. I begin to wonder if she already knows we are almost awake, but the final bell rings and she smiles back at me.

"That's all the time we have today, thank you again miss Reeves." I pick up my bad and leave the room, making my way back into the hall. Theo jumps out in front me when I open the central office door.

"Hey Reeves." he says flashing me a grin, he carries his bag on one shoulder. "Walking home?"

"Yeah, what's it to you Theo." I laugh and begin walking down the hall.

"I'll walk you." He tells me. I hadn't really had time to even talk to him about anything yet, but I also feel like I don't even have to. It's kind of funny how the camp is now my past life, we made it out and I don't know whether it is for the better or worse. What once seemed like false hope is now the burden of knowing.

"Are you still going to call me that?" I say breaking our silence.

"What, Reeves?" He asks, I nod my head. "Yeah, I think I will.... I mean I like knowing your last name, I like knowing my own, better than when we didn't have any. Plus, I got to get to know you all over again." He smiles at the ground. "I knew you were cool, guess it was fate." I look at the white pavement as well, listening to the sound of our slow steps for a bit.

"You are pretty cool yourself, chubs." I smile poking him in the rib.

"It was a phase." He laughs.

"There are still some holes in my memory, like how we even got out." I tell him.

"Yeah, but at least we got out." His light tone shifts as he says this. We turn into my street. "Do you miss it?" He asks.

"No.... but do I wish it never happened? No" I tell him.

"That night we were in cabin four, just us, I....."

"Ly.... oh, you're here too." She calls from her car.

"Nice to see you too Andrews." Theo flashes her a smile. I walk over and pop my head through her open window.

"We are going to Tony's tonight," She tells me ignoring Theo, "and I know Tony's is an asshole, but a party is a party."

"Sounds great." I tell her.

"Get in, we can get ready at mine. I have some clothes for you to try out." I turn back to Theo and give him a half smile.

"See you at Tony's?" I ask him opening the car door.

"Yeah, see you there." He tells me.

I slip on a tight fitting, white, long sleeved shirt and tuck it into my high waisted wide legged jeans. I usually avoid wearing the colour white, draws too much attention, but it's not her fault.
