It's still pretty early in the morning. Hazy blue light illuminates outside as the sun still hides on the east side of town. All I can hear are my feet as I walk in the middle of the main road. Every store front is still dark. No cars are parked in the street. Its just me. I stop suddenly, all weigh shifts towards me feet. Turning my head, the right side of the road, I examine Tom's toy store, then the bookstore beside it. To the left side of the road is a rusty metal fence. I don't know why I never visited it before. There nothing beyond it but an empty plot as far as the human eye can see, but I know what it was, I know what it leads to.
I'm not ready yet to go. I have to see my friends one more time. I spent all night with Momma and Grandma, and there's more they had taught me in those few hours then being at a hundred could have ever had. If I had more time maybe I could learn how to be myself again. Momma told me we'd leave town for a bit and stay with Deshawn now with my junior year ending. All these things that could have been, my life pull out from under me.
I take another look at the fence. I never met Coby, but I know him well enough to know he wouldn't had let it go on for this long. He would had been here weeks ago, maybe months even. Well I'm here now. Good enough. I'll be here again.
I continue down the road. The clouds are thin and separated amongst each other. Andy's is a few blocks ahead. As soon as I walk inside, none of this exists. I'll smile for them and for once, my thoughts will be silent. In the end, the world will finally stop revolving around me and shift focus. I'll come back and we'll start over. I'll be with Maddison this time round. I'll have my whole life to be me again. Regardless of if I remember or not, they will be free. They'll be different, but it will be okay. It's for the best, life is never a piece out of place. I smile wiping the blood from my nose. My last few words in here, my last time in here. This time I get to say goodbye.
I am the first one inside Andy's. I take the booth closest to the back wall and look out the glass window.
