"Wait." Harper stops me before I can move off Jessie's car. The parking lot is lit up by the setting sun. The air warmer now, hazier than it was.
"What?" I reply.
"Clearly there's something up with you," she tells me, "Who is Theo Millar?" Harpers face is softer than her usual intimidating appearance. Light creases dwell between her dark brows, and her eyes hope struck. She's concerned.... about me.
"He's doing nothing interesting....." I start, but suddenly her hands are pressed against my cheeks. Her eyebrows furrow into eachother like they did when she tried to read back at camp. She makes a face before bringing my head towards her and planting her lips on mine.
"What are you doing," I laugh apon her mouth. I place my palm on her forehead gently push her head back. The corners of her lip rise up deep into her cheeks as she reveals her teeth. I can't tell if shes teasing me or planing bite my hand. Eitherway, its probably the scariest thing ive seen all year.
"Willjay is my best friend." I tell her.
"I know that." She laughs. I feel my own eyebrows furrow in confusion.
"Why would you do that? Are you not happy with Willjay?" I ask.
"No that's not why i kissed you." She tells me. "Well i didnt excatly think it all through but J.P told me about when....."
"Why did you..."
"You didn't like that did you? You don't find girls..."
"Harper." I stop her before she can finish. I don't know how she found out. "Did Alix say something to you?"
"No, I see the way you look at my brother, especially that night at Andy's. I just thought......wait is Alix....."
"Harper." Why does it feel like my life is collapsing beneath me.
"Did something happen between you and..."
"Harper." Soon they will all know. Everyone will know. Then what?
"I understand why you might not tell Willjay, but Ly and I? What happens if we know?" Of course I don't say anything. "Tell me or I'll tell..."
"You would have started treating me differently, looking at me differently. I'll be different." I tell her.
"What about Alix, he's as different as it gets." She tells me. "He's....... like Ly.... he's..." I hadn't thought about that. Here I am using Alix's words to get Harper to open up to me when I'm sitting here lying to myself. I open my palm and stare at the peach sunlight pooling in my hand.
"You think I'm selfish." I mutter.
"I think you're scared chubs." Wraps her arms around my shoulders. "Whoever you were, whoever you are Theodore Millar doesn't change the fact that you will always be exactly who we needed, who we still need and love."
