9 PM  |  Yejin

I wanted to puke.

Everybody cheered when the main course arrived and I could only think - How come I wanna puke when I literally only had a toast and two cocktails today?

As usual, Jungkook had noticed it and a basket of bread had magically appeared by my plate.

I glanced at him, wanting to thank him for always being so considerate. He was looking the other way, busy practicing English with his table neighbor.

"Yejin, right?"

I turned to the man sitting in front of me. He was chewing with an open mouth on his steak.

I nodded as an answer.

"So... What do you do?"

His stare went from me to Jungkook, probably wondering what I was doing with him.

His wife next to him gave me the side-eye. I had been listening to them gossip all evening long, trying to avoid interactions - without success.

I looked down to my plate, pushing a carrot piece around with my fork.

"I work in a beauty store-"

"Amazing!" the wife interrupted. "When did you launch it?"

Of course, they would think that.

"It's not mine. I'm a sales assistant there."

I looked back up, enjoying the shock on their faces as they swallowed my answer.

"And at night, I work at a convenience store."

Coup de grâce.

The man's eyes went from me to Jungkook again.

Now, he was probably wondering what I was doing here at all.

"David just said my English improved a lot!"

Jungkook's head turned to me, a wide bunny smile on his face, his eyes twinkling with pride.

I smiled, relieved to have him back in the conversation.

"It's thanks to Yejin!" he turned to his neighbor again. "I practice with her!"

The couple in front of me looked at each other.

"She's also fluent in Chinese and Japanese," I heard him speak to his table friend. "She used to manage our tours before... Well, you know."

His neighbor answered with a question I didn't hear.

In front of me, it felt like the couple had just found redeeming qualities in me.

"Oh, so you're working for BigHit?"

"Not anymore."

I blinked and looked back at my plate, not wanting to encourage further conversation.

"This past year hasn't been ideal for the concert industry, that's for sure..." the woman commented, probably assuming I had been laid off.

"I wasn't fired. I quit my job."

She raised her brows at me, probably surprised by my tone of voice. Her husband chewed harder on his piece of steak, frowning with confusion.

"For which company are you planning to apply next? JYP? YG? SM?" he asked, listing all the biggest entertainment companies of Seoul.
