Overdose - Chapter 44

-Alex-

What does a nineteen-year-old who never had more than three hundred dollars at his disposal do when he is given five hundred fifty thousand dollars? Well, first he cries because his friend who used to give him free booze and tell him stories is gone. Then, he stares at the check for three weeks wondering if it was all some big misunderstanding and that Lenny only meant to leave five hundred dollars. Then, he realizes that there's no way Lenny would leave five hundred and tell him to go to France with it.

So eventually, the nineteen-year-old opens his first bank account and has the money deposited but is afraid to touch it in case Lenny's family wants it back. Honestly, what the hell was he thinking? What do I do with all that money other than go to France to fulfill a dead man's wish? Fuck, I don't even speak French. You can buy yourself a French dictionary first.

I would have used the money to pay my medical bills but a few weeks ago, the receipt for my medical bills came in the mail and the leftover balance was zero. Jackson's parents surely didn't have to but on account of their son's confession, I'm glad they did because my mom and my dad no longer have to worry about that.

My dad suggested I buy a car but for what reason? I'm perfectly fine using the bus. I only ever go to four places: Nico's apartment, work, Dr. Hayes' office, and as of recently, Dawson County Jail. A car would be a waste of money.

Speaking of, Chester's case has been an absolute shit show. While everyone thinks that the police botched the investigation, I know for a fact that Chester is behind it all. As he said, a lot of people owe him money and because of this, evidence came up missing. The gun he used was "never found", the video footage of the parking lot where it happened got lost, and the private plane GPS which would have shown Chester flying there was "destroyed in a fire".

The only thing they have on him now is that he walked into the station and turned himself in for the shooting. Coincidentally, whoever was present during his actual confession up and quit without any note. Also, the cameras in the room where he supposedly confessed were reported to have stopped working the day before he turned himself in.

I seriously don't know how he is managing to ruin his own trial but part of me is hoping he gets to leave soon. Seeing as though all the officials in this town are involved in Chester's drug distribution operations, I don't think he'll be in there for long. He can ruin their life without having to lift a finger. They won't risk their reputation.

"Alex! Clothes go in the basket, NOT the floor!" My dad shouts from behind me, making me jump in fright. "Are you trying to give me a seizure? Because if you are, that'd be pretty fucked up, Dad," I swivel around in my chair to face him. He's wearing his scrubs and still has his name tag on. I'm glad he's no longer working doubles; he's starting to look like himself again.

"Language. Dude, pick up after yourself. You're not a kid anymore," He frowns while picking up my clothes and throwing them in the basket. Parent logic is to scold their kid about not doing something in the process of them doing it for their kid. Nice one, dad.

"Sorry but look, I've been working on the sketch of Sabrina. I think it's coming along great!" I grab the paper from my desk and hold it up. His eyes are soft, and he takes the paper from me, examining it with care. I smile, I'm glad he finally moved on from the divorce, and I hope my mom is too.

"It looks great, bud! You think she'll like it?" He asks, taking a seat at the edge of my bed. He asked me to draw her a week ago so that he can give it to her for her birthday next month. At first, I was hesitant, but I decided that it was about time to take drawing seriously.
