Overdose - Chapter 27

-Alex-

"Alex, Nico's outside," My dad pops his head into my room. I nod, turning to the mirror. This is as good as it's going to get. Alex, wearing all black like he's going to a funeral, what a surprise?! Nico probably looks fresh off the runway but then again, that's him. He likes to dress for success. And what do you like to dress for? Funeral.

I don't think it has settled that I'm going on a date yet. I've been on dates before but never where other people could see me. And they always ended in me doing something I didn't want to do. I'm not sure what to expect or how to behave. Maybe it's just me overthinking but I feel like I'll ruin this night somehow. Don't behave like a wild animal and you'll be okay.

Nico insisted on picking me up from my house instead of me meeting him at his apartment. He says that he'd rather give my dad the peace of mind of knowing that I'm in safe hands. I appreciate that he makes so much effort to prove that he has no intention of hurting me. It's not something grand but I feel a lot more relaxed.

A week has passed since our more than eventful encounter in Nico's darkroom. Since then, I have re-lived it every time I've closed my eyes. I can still feel his touch and the way his lips felt on mine. This must be somewhat unhealthy.

"You look nice, are you nervous?" My dad opens the door a bit more before stepping inside the room. "Not really, I just don't feel like it's set in yet," I answer, grabbing my phone from the nightstand. "That's okay. I'm sure Nico has something planned that won't veer you too far out of your comfort zone," he says, wrapping his arm around my shoulder and leading me toward the door.

"Have fun, Alex. In case you forgot, you deserve all the happiness in the world, and you shouldn't be ashamed to smile from your heart," he says, turning to me when we reach the living room. I swallow the lump in my throat and nod, "Thank you, Dad."

He pulls me into a hug before placing a kiss on the top of my head, "I love you to the moon and back, kid."

"I love you too. I'll see you later and please don't wait up; you have work in the morning!" I say sternly. He chuckles before throwing his hands up in surrender.

I exhale loudly before opening the front door and making my way to Nico's car. As I get closer, the driver's side door opens, and he hops out. He's dressed casually which makes me feel less concerned about wearing jeans. I'm pretty sure I've folded a sweater similar to the one he has on at Taylor's store, the only difference is that the one he's wearing is a light tan color.

"Hi," I offer him a warm smile. He returns the smile before opening the passenger's door for me, "You look nice," He compliments as I hop into the car. He closes the door gently then he walks over to the driver's side. "You never told me where we're going," I say after he gets in.

He chuckles softly, "then that would ruin the surprise. I made reservations for dinner and then we'll go somewhere else that I think you'll like...hopefully," He mumbles the last part quickly before starting the car.

"You don't sound too confident," I intone, unable to keep myself from smirking. "Because I'm not, this is my first date since the night my ex almost killed me in a car crash. Pardon my nervousness," He jokes. "Not that it's a competition but I think my last date beats yours," I scoff lightly.

For a moment he looks stunned but my smile assures him that it's okay to laugh. "I spent the entire day overthinking about all the ways I could mess up and I think that's what's making me so nervous," Nico admits as he makes a turn out of my neighborhood. I feel myself relax hearing that I wasn't the only one stressing over tonight.
