Three months later...

Christmas music echoed through the small home as Sierra put one of the final ornaments on the tree. The four foot tall fake tree sat in the corner of the living room, a handful of presents underneath it. The built-in lights flickered as she hummed to "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas", setting the little crystal ornament in its place.

"There," she said, stepping back to admire her handiwork. The tree glistened and glowed in the lamplight, and Sierra grinned, rubbing the swell in her belly instinctively. Christmas was her favourite season, and it was only a few weeks away. Karl's release would be soon, but she didn't know when. She hoped that he'd be home in time for Christmas Day.

Picking up the yellow star, Sierra looked down at Bella, her little brown pitbull she had adopted not long after moving in. "What do you think, Bella?" she asked the pup, who lifted her head from the floor. Her tail hit the floor just at being acknowledged. "Should we wait for daddy to come home to put the topper on?"

Bella licked her lips and barked, and Sierra laughed. "Alright, we'll save it."

She placed the topper in its box and set it beside the tree, and sat down on the couch with a groan. Bella clambered up on the couch and rested her head on Sierra's lap, and she rubbed the pup's ears. "I hope Karl likes you," she said to Bella, who's tail pat the couch loudly. "But it sucks to be him if he doesn't, because I'm not bringing you back."

Bella licked Sierra's hand and touched her nose to Sierra's belly. She looked down as she felt the baby kick, and she smiled. The first time she felt the kick, she had been in the shower and almost slipped from the shock she felt. Tears came afterwards, both of happiness and sadness. She got a call from Karl a day or so after, and she gushed about everything to him. He listened with heartfelt joy and shared the same excitement, and the same pain as she did with not being with her. When she went to go find out the baby's gender alone, she asked the doctor to put the answer in an envelope that Sierra had nestled into the tree's branches, waiting to be opened by them both.

Sierra rubbed her belly as she felt the baby move and she smiled. "Daddy's going to be home soon, little love," she murmured. "Not sure when, but I know he will be excited to feel you just as much as I do."

After another waddle to the bathroom for the umpteenth time that day, Sierra began to cook a small meal of chicken and rice. She did her best to listen to Heisenberg and eat whenever she could. Her cravings had been horrible when she hit her second trimester, along with her hormones being unbalanced as hell. She had gained at least ten more pounds, much to her annoyance, but she kept good faith knowing why she did.

After her meal, she was working on the dishes when she had a knock at her door. Bella barked and Sierra hushed her. "Sit, Bella," she said sternly as she wiped her hands on a towel. The pitbull obeyed and sat watching the door, letting out growls as Sierra walked up to it.
