She took a deep breath and Owen placed his hand on her lower back. She smiled at him gratefully and opened the door to the nursery.
"Hello you two," Sean smiled watching them come in."Hi Dr. Sean," She said hugging him tightly. Owen nodded at him and he nodded back. "Where are the babies?" she asked softly looking at all the babies in the nursery.
"Right here," Sean said as he pulled her over to two bassinets.
"Twin girls?" She asked looking at the pink cards. He nodded as he led her to a rocking chair. She sat down and removed her over shirt. Owen stood by her as she sat there in only a tank top. "Sean someone can just walk in," she whispered and he nodded.
"Go up to my office and I will bring them up. You have your rocking chair in there," he said as he wrote something down on a clipboard.
Owen led her to Sean's office and shut the door. She completely removed her shirts since she knew as much skin she could provide for skin to skin was very important. Sean use to tell her how he would take his shirt off to do skin to skin with other babies that needed it. Most volunteers just work tank tops but she wasn't comfortable showing that much skin to anyone other than her husbands. Owen covered her up with Sean's blanket but not before kissing her and groaning in appreciation on feeling her breasts in his hands. She had a habit of not wearing bras and the men loved it.
"Later Owen," she smirked and he rolled his eyes then kissed her again. Just as he was covering her up the door opened.
"Here we go Pookie," Sean said as he pushed two bassinets into his office. He shut the door and locked it so no one could walk in by accident. He lifted one of the girls while Owen grabbed the other one.
They each unswaddled the teeny tiny babies and placed them on her chest. She held them and was shocked when a sense of protectiveness and warmth came over her as she looked down at them. They gave her a sense of love in her heart that she didn't know she was missing.
"What happened Sean?" She asked curiously.
"I'd rather not say Pookie," he shook his head as he snuck a picture.
"Tell me Sean," she pleaded while looking at him.
"I'd rather not Pookie," he said softly. "I worry it will upset you."
"I'm okay Sean," she whispered looking at the tiny girls, "I have you and Owen."
Sean kneeled down in front of her and gripped her knee in a comforting way. "Their mother was the victim of an obsessed stalker and was not able to get away. The father was the stalker and he was killed by the police."
"Oh," She whispered as tears formed in her eyes. Memories came back and the thoughts of what could have happened started to form. She was so thankful that she didn't end up like the twins' mother. She sniffled and Owen wiped the tears away. She looked up at them and smiled softly. "I love you," she mouthed and they mouthed it back before they each took a turn kissing her forehead.
They watched her watch the babies and shared a look to one another. Sean got paged and he sighed, "I'm sorry Pookie but I got to go, I will be back in a bit to get them back. I will have Erica bring bottles up in a little bit for when they get hungry. Thank you again for doing this. They are already doing better."
She watched him leave then went back to watching the babies sleep on her chest. It just felt right to her, she couldn't explain it other than a hole she didn't know she had was filled. The fear and worry she had about holding them was now gone. She wanted to hold them all the time now.
There was a knock on the door and Owen covered her up. He opened it briefly then opened it more when he noticed it was Erica. She walked in holding tiny bottles and smiled at her. "Look at you," She smiled as she walked over and sat beside her. "It looks natural on you."
"You think?" She asked as Owen slipped out to give her some privacy. He could tell she needed a mother's point of view on the turmoil she was going through.
"Yes I do," She smiled. "You shouldn't fear being any different of a mother just because you couldn't carry one. How do you think adoptive mothers or mothers that use surrogacy feel? They are just as important as women who deliver children, sometimes even more so because they choose to be mothers instead of just becoming mothers."
"I never really thought of it that way," Marie whispered. The babies started to stir so Erica grabbed the boppy that she brought with her and showed her how to feed both of them at the same time. "Do you think?" She asked Erica and Erica burst out laughing.
"Girl you are crazy to think they will tell you no," She smiled as she wiped a tear away. "Can you just imagine Gabriel telling you no he doesn't want to shop for two more girls?"Marie bit back a laugh so she wouldn't shake the babies and smiled, "Thank you Oma," She whispered and Erica's face completely lit up. "It's German for Grandma."
"Oma," she smiled, "I like that."
Owen came back in and smiled at the look on Marie's face. "Owen," She breathed while looking at him.
He gave her that special smile that is just for her and nodded, "I will call the team to meet us here so you can tell them yourself."
"Really Owen?" She asked and he nodded.
"Of course Darling," he said taking a picture of her feeding them. "Sean and I had a feeling from the moment you held them you had a look that just told us." He pulled out his phone and placed a call, "Meeting in Dr. Green's office now""
