It had been a week since the Hydra raid, and there were no full-team missions for Loki to go on. I was hoping that one would happen soon, even though I preferred not to think about what we would have to be facing.
I spent a lot of my time with Loki, and in my lab. Sometimes at the same time. I set aside the ice blasters for now, choosing to work on something else while I built up my magical abilities.
Dinner had just finished, and I was working on making boots that could help you fly, sort of like my dad's suit, but without the suit.
That made no sense.
Anyway, I was working on that now. I grabbed tools as I worked, trying to do what I needed to do. My phone buzzed and I checked the caller ID before picking up.
"Hey, Harley," I said. "How are you?"
"Y/n," he said. "Tony isn't picking up the goddamn phone."
"Don't take that tone with me, young man," I said. "You shouldn't say stuff like 'goddamn'. Also, it's Thor damn, or Loki damn."
"Stop with your god jokes," he grumbled. "The potato gun is fried. I don't know what happened."
"Are you sure you weren't experimenting on it again?" I asked, leaving my lab. "That's what happened last time."
Harley was silent and I knew I'd caught him.
"I'll find Tony and see if he'll video chat you," I said. "Just give me a sec."
I asked Friday where my dad was, and she replied that he was in his lab. Typical. I walked up a flight of stairs to my dad's lab and found him working hard.
"Harley, I found out why he's not answering," I said.
"Why?" Harley asked.
"He's inventing," I said.
My dad still hadn't noticed me. It might have had something to do with the fact that he was blasting Highway to Hell by AC/DC as loud as the speakers would allow.
"Figures. I can hear the music."
I chuckled and asked Friday to turn off the music. My dad spun around, curses on his lips.
"No one turns off my goddamn music-"
He stopped when he saw me.
"Oh, Y/n," he said. "What d'you need, kiddo?"
"I need you to stop saying goddamn and say Loki damn, or Thor damn," I said. "But also, Harley's been calling you for the past... how long were you calling him for, Harley?"
"Ten minutes," Harley said.
My dad chuckled. He grabbed a hologram and swiped at it a few times. Harley disconnected the call and answered my dad's video call. His lanky form appeared on the screen, and I waved to him.
"See you, Harley," I said. "I've got inventing of my own to complete."
Harley waved goodbye to me and then began to grill my dad on how it was rude to ignore someone that you are 'connected to'. I chuckled on my way back down to my lab.
When I reached my sacred place, I continued my invention. I played some music, and f/s came on. I began humming along as I worked. I burnt myself a couple of times, but it was fine.
At about midnight, I got the munchies, so I went up to the kitchen to grab a snack. I made myself a coffee as well and I grabbed a box of pop tarts. They might have been Thor's, but I could always buy him another box.
Once my coffee was finished, I grabbed an energy drink out of the fridge as well. I was tempted to mix them together, but I didn't want to have a heart attack.
I made it back to my lab and place my energy drink on a shelf. I kept it cool with my power and continued working.
It was about three in the morning when I started feeling exhaustion. I'd almost figured out what I was doing, and my brain worked better in the early hours of the morning. I reached over for my energy drink when there was a cough from the doorway.
I turned around to face Loki.
"Morning, Loki," I said, trying not to yawn. "What are you doing up so late? I mean, early?"
Loki smiled at me fondly.
"I could ask you the same question," he said. "Aren't Midgardians supposed to sleep?"
"Aren't Asgardians?" I shot back.
Loki looked like what I said pained him for a moment before he wiped it away and smiled at me.
"Not quite, Darling. I do not need to sleep as often as mortals do," he said.
I scoffed, the nickname not registering in my brain.
"I am not mortal," I mumbled. "I mean, have you seen me?"
Loki chuckled.
"Perhaps not mortal, but certainly Midgardian," he said.
I grumbled at him and reached for my energy drink, but it was pulled away by phantom hands. I glared at Loki, and he looked back at me innocently.
"What?" he asked. "I didn't do anything."
"I need that," I grumbled, reaching for it again.
It slid out of my reach, and I glared at him again.
"What you need, Darling, is sleep," Loki said. "I will escort you to your room."
"I don't need an escort," I said, itching to get back to work.
Loki just gave me a Look.
"Yes, you do," he said. "You will come running back to your lab if I do not escort you."
I rolled my eyes. He was right, but I still needed to invent.
"I'll go to bed in... ten minutes," I said.
Loki shook his head at me. Before I could figure out what he was doing, he was in front of me and had swept my legs out from under me. I fell backwards into his other arm, and he held me bridal-style.
"Loki," I mumbled, my eyelids drooping. "Need work."
I was feeling a lot sleepier now that I was in his arms. Was he using magic on me? Or was I just really tired?
I must have fallen asleep on the way to my bedroom because I woke up again as Loki opened the door. I wasn't entirely awake, though. Just slightly conscious.
I could feel my consciousness ebbing away quickly, but I fought to stay awake. I was failing miserably.
I felt Loki lay me down in my blankets and pulled them over me. I felt his cool lips press against my forehead and a whispered, 'sleep well, Darling.'
But when I awoke just before lunch time, I was sure I'd imagined it.
Even if I wished I hadn't.
