"Alright, team," I said. "We're just here to shut down the Hydra base. I know most of you have done this before, so this should be a piece of cake."

The Shield agents nodded, and I rattled off a few more details.

This was a punishment from Fury. I just knew it. I hated leading missions. I guess it was payback for kidnapping his cat for a day. The cat that Loki and Thor were convinced wasn't actually a cat.

The quinjet landed in a meadow. There was nothing but grass and flowers as far as the eye could see. That also meant that there was no Hydra base in sight. The quinjet door opened, filling the jet with silence, and the occasional rustle of wind.

"This is shady," I said.

I put on my Mig glasses and scanned the area. There was nothing to see. I stepped out of the jet and looked around.

I didn't end up needing my glasses because yells started from the inside the jet. The Shield agents jumped out and ran towards me. I watched in horror as a massive, fiery being grabbed the jet and melted it in its grasp.

The creature towered over us at what looked to be eighteen feet tall. It looked as if it were a decaying corpse, with embers flying out through cracks in its body. It had massive horns coming out of the side of its head and it roared when it saw us.

"I am Surtur!" the fire thing yelled. "I have come to lay waste to your lowly planet!"

"Get behind me!" I yelled at the Shield agents.

They all did as I commanded, and I shot a beam of ice at the fire creature. The creature shrieked in pain as I froze its shoulder. I watched in horror as fire devoured my ice and its shoulder became good as new.

"Contact the Avengers," I said.

I shot more ice at the fire monster, slowing it down but not defeating it. The ground began to rumble and smaller, but no less terrifying fire creatures began to crawl out from cracks that formed in the earth. The Shield agents battled against the normal sized fire creatures while I continued to use ice and magic against the bigger threat.

Ten minutes into the battle, the first Shield agent fell. He screamed as a fire creature grabbed his head. His helmet melted, and then his skull did too.

A minute later, two more Shield agents fell. A minute after, and three more fell. There were nine left, including me. They used ice blasters against the fire creatures, but it wasn't enough.

Eventually the bigger fire creature must have gotten bored of me because it smacked me away. I flew through the air and rolled three times before coming to a stop. The big fire creature crushed two more Shield agents under his foot.

"Y/n!" a frantic, familiar voice called.

"Loki," I mumbled, shaking the dizziness from my head. "Where are you?"

"We are on our way, Darling," he said frantically. I realised that his voice was coming through my earpiece. "The fire demon you are fighting against, his name is Surtur. You cannot defeat him on your own. You need to wait for us to arrive."

"That's not going to end well," I said. "There's only five of us left."

Tears rolled down my cheeks. I hadn't been able to protect the agents. I was supposed to be an Avenger, but I couldn't save the lives of those who stood behind me.

I surveyed the battlefield. The remaining five soldiers battled against smaller fire demons. The bigger one, Surtur, seemed content to just watch everything play out.

And then I realised what I had to do. Realised what I needed to give, in order to do it.

"I'm going to create a magical pocket with my ice inside," I said.

"A pocket that big will use all of your power," Loki warned. "You will freeze from the inside out."

"I know," I whispered.

A wail brought my attention to one of the remaining agents. She screamed as a fire demon punched a fist straight through her gut. I rallied up my power and killed seven fire demons in a wave of ice.

"Y/n, no way," my dad said. "We're on our way."

"How far away are you?" I asked.

There was a moment of silence.

"I am twenty minutes from teleportation distance," Loki said.

"I'll be dead by then anyway," I said.

"Then teleport away now," Loki said. "Fight this battle another day."

"I will not leave my team behind," I said. "I'll fight to the end."

"Y/n..." Wanda sobbed. "Please. Please don't do this."

I took a deep breath. More screams of the Shield agents filled my ears, and then there was silence. Only the crackle of fire as all of the fire demons turned their attention to me.

"It's the only thing we can do," I said. "Thor – Thor is off world. Loki, you're too far away. We'll all be dead by the time you arrive."

The silence from the team told me that they had not argument against it. I grunted as I shot a spear of ice through four fire monsters.

"You're all an amazing family," I said, rallying my power.

I began running towards Surtur. He hand his hands resting atop his sword with a smug grin on his face.

"Y/n, don't," my dad begged. "Please, kiddo, just wait for us to get there-"

"There's no time," I choked out.

I used my ice blasters to shoot at a few fire demons, keeping my ice reserve full.

"I love you all so much," I said. "Dad... you've always been an amazing dad. I love you so much."

There was a sniffle in my ear.

"Loki..." I suppressed a sob. "I really did want to marry you one day."

"Y/n, please," Loki whispered. "Don't do this."

The ring on my finger became a weight. I glanced at it once before steeling myself.

"Thank you all for being my family," I said, stopping before Surtur.

Surtur grinned at me evilly.

"You cannot defeat me, Mortal!" he boomed.

I pulled the earpiece out and threw it to the ground. Hearing my family would only make this harder. Surtur laughed at me as my hands began to glow blue.

"I am not mortal," I said.

I took a deep breath and briefly closed my eyes. I held my hands out towards Surtur and opened my eyes. His mouth opened in shock as my magic encased him. I started filling the magical ball with my ice, and Surtur began to shriek in fear. My ice attacked him, freezing him. His fire battled against my power, but my ice returned every time he melted it.

My ice creaked as it enveloped him fully. I took another deep breath. This was it.

I love you, Loki, I thought down our telepathic bond.

My magic bubble popped, and ice exploded through the air. I felt ice pierce at my skin. The popping of my magic bubble allowed my magic free, and it raced across the plain, freezing everything in the way. Surtur shattered with the force of the pop, pieces of his body raining down on the plain.

I held my hands together and repressed a shiver. I looked down at them to see them begin to turn blue with frostbite.

This was it. This was the end. The only thing I regretted was not being able to see Loki or my father one last time.

The ice crawled up my body, and I let out one, last, clouded breath before my consciousness faded.
