Chapter Sixty-Two

I frown.

"Where are they going?" I ask nobody in particular.

"Oh...... Busted." One of the guys comments and I scowl as I stand up.

"I'm going to the toilet." I excuse myself quickly and stand up and start walking after Luke and Summer. They round a corner and I hear Summer's voice.

"Why did you ask Phoebe to the dance?"

"Uh.... Because....." Luke trails off.

"Because of a dare?"

"Well... Yeah, that and-"

"And what?" Summer demands.

"And.... I asked her because I wanted to."

"Because of a dare, huh?"

"What? No! I asked her because.... It was partly a dare and partly because I wanted to ask her to the dance."

"And you expect me to believe that?"

"Uh, yes?"

"God, Luke. You-"

"Okay, give me a few minutes to explain myself."

"Fine." Summer huffs.

"Well, one of the guys told me ask her out as a dare, and I just thought, maybe I should ask her, because I kind of wanted to ask her in the first place. I wanted to see if she liked me back, so I covered it up with a dare." Luke says quickly. For a few moments, it's silent.

"Uh huh. So.... You like her? Like, like like her?"

"Yeah." Luke says sheepishly.

"You better not be kidding."

"I'm not!" Luke says. "I swear!"

"Good. Because let me give you a heads up. She actually likes you back, but that's only between you and me, okay?" Summer says and Luke nods.

"She does?"

"Yeah."

"I d-didn't think she would like me back."

"But she does." Summer says. "Why would she have said yes to you?!"

"Cool." Luke says, and Summer does something unexpected. She leans in and hugs Luke.

"I hope this works out between you two, I really want it to." Summer says and pulls away. Then Luke pulls her in for another hug, which Summer returns.

"Same. And thanks, by the way." Luke says.

"Hey, Sophie?" I say slowly.

"Hey, Ray." Sophie says to me. "Who's this?" Sophie looks at Colton, who's standing next to me nervously.

"Uh, this is.... Colton." I say.

"Hey." Colton says and Sophie smiles.

"Hey, Colton." Sophie says.

"Have you talked to Summer?" I ask, eyeing Colton out of the corner of my eye, who's looking at Sophie.

"Yeah. I think she believes me." Sophie nods.

"You think?"

"I know." Sophie corrects, then she looks at Colton. "Um, I don't mean to rude, Colton, but.... Are you going to keep staring at me like that?"

"W-wha......? I m-mean," Colton clears his throat. "Sorry."

"Anyway...." I say, breaking the awkward silence. "Thanks, Sophie."

"It's okay." Sophie smiles. Colton takes a step forward towards Sophie. Sophie glances at me, clearly stating she's uncomfortable.

"Uh, Colt-" I start to say but it's too late because Colton leaned in and kissed Sophie right there. Sophie tenses up, but she kisses him back. And I just stand there awkwardly. "Well, I'll be going then. Catch you guys later." I say and walk away, leaving them still kissing each other.

"Summer?" I walk up to Summer, who's sitting on her towel, on the beach.

"Hey, Ray!"

"What are you doing?" I say as I sit down next to her.

"I don't know, I just kind do needed to clear my head." Summer says, giving me a smile.

"Oh."

"Yeah." Summer says as she looks at me, and our eyes lock. I look into her blue eyes, and all I want to do is to just hug and kiss her and go back to when we were together.

"Hey, want to go for a surf?" I ask suddenly.

"Sure." Summer says, and we both stand up. Summer suddenly bends down and writes her name in the sand with a stick. "Here. Write you name." Summer says, handing me the stick. I write my name, but I don't hand her the stick back, I just keep writing, below our names.

WILL YOU GO ON A DATE WITH ME?

I write in slightly wonky letters. Summer looks at it, and then looks up at me. Then she slowly walks towards me, and then she throws her arms around me, giving me a hug.

"Yes." Summer whispers, and I smile as I hug her back.
