Summer Danvers
"Good job yesterday." I hear a voice behind me, and see it's Ray.
"Thanks. You too." I say, turning back to my locker.
"Hopefully you won't be backup again." Ray smirks. I punch him playfully in the arm. "Just teasing." He winces.
"Well I was better than you- you who hasn't even gone further than regionals." I retort, and this time, it's me smirking.
"Well, it's not far off being backup for nationals." He huffs.
"Actually, it is." I say, and get some books out of my locker.
"Well, this year must be the year then." He says playfully. "See you later."
"Bye." I say as he walks off. I put some books into my bag, and get my phone out to check the time. I have 10 minutes until the bell goes, so I text my friend Brittany since we have our first class of the day together, physical education.
Hey where r u?
I put my phone back in my pocket, and start to walk when I bump into someone.
"Oh, I'm so sor-" I stop myself mid-sentence.
"Finish your sentence." Hugh chuckles, gesturing me to continue. I close my mouth shut.
"I'd rather not." I say, getting my phone as it vibrates.
I'm at my locker, getting my books. We have pe next right?
Brittany's text reads. I start to text back.
"Busy with something there?" Hugh asks, peering at my phone screen.
Yeah. I'll head over to ur locker soon.
I put my phone away, crossing my arms and turning to Hugh.
"Yeah, I am. I do have a life you know."
"I know that." Hugh says.
"Well then what?" I say.
"Well, I just wanted to say.... Um, well-" I raise my eyebrows at him, not used to him acting this way.
"Summer! There you are." We both turn to see Brittany walking up to us.
"I-I better go." Hugh says quickly and start to walk away when I grab his wrist.
"You're gonna have to tell me what you were gonna say. Later." I say, raising an eyebrow, and then I let go of his wrist, turning to Brittany.
"Sorry. Did I interrupt something?" Brittany asks, looking at Hugh walking away.
"No." I scoff. "Sorry I couldn't get to you, I was just gonna head over."
"It's okay. I thought you would be here." Brittany shrugs as we head over to the gym. "Ugh I hate having P.E on Monday morning. I am never in the mood."
"Neither." I groan, running a hand through my hair as we arrive at the gym just as the bell goes. We head into the changing rooms and get changed. We both head out after we're changed, and into the gym.
"Okay, two warm up laps. Go!" Miss Samuels, my P.E teacher shouts and we start running. "Oh, and Summer." She turns to me, and I head over to her, gesturing for Brittany to start without me. I guess I'll have to run two laps by myself. With everyone staring at me. Just great. "I saw you surf yesterday. Congrats for getting through by the way. You did great. I really think you have potential to win. First ever girl huh?"
"Oh, thanks." I say. Not expecting this at all. An awkward silence settles in the air and Miss Samuels clears her throat.
"You can just do one lap since I've kept you for a bit." Miss Samuels chuckles.
"Okay." I say, and start running. After I've finished the lap, Brittany comes up to me.
"Oh my god, I can't believe I forgot to ask. Did you get through to regionals? I'm so sorry again I couldn't make it!"
"It's okay, and yeah, I made it." I say slowly. She jumps and hugs me.
"Oh my god! Good luck! And congratulations! That is soooo good! Who else went through?"
"Well, Ray, and......"
"Hugh? I'm guessing?" Brittany says, rolling her eyes as I nod. "Of course." She mutters. Hugh and Brittany are cousins.
"Okay guys! Today we will start with a game of..... Any suggestions?" Miss Samuels says, looking at all of us.
"Tee-ball!" Someone shouts and Miss Samuel nods.
"Okay, everyone get all the gear ready for tee-ball!" Everyone rushes to get the all the gear. Me and Brittany hang back a bit, because normally when we try to get the gear, everyone's already taken it anyway. Besides, we can never be bothered anyway.
"I really don't get why everyone's so excited to get gear. Why would you be rushing to get gear?" Brittany mutters under her breath, so only I can hear. I laugh. After everything's set up, we get split into teams, and of course, me and Brittany are on different teams. It always happens. It's like Miss Samuels doesn't like us in the same team. I don't mind P.E, and I don't actually mind running that much. I actually don't mind Physical Education being mandatory in school. Well, I don't like having it on Monday mornings.
"Okay teams, choose your captain." Miss Samuels says. Our team gathers in a circle.
"I think Summer should be captain." A voice says and my head snaps towards the direction.
Hugh Macilwain.
"What?" I say, pulling a face. Me? A captain?
I shuffle over towards him.
"What are you doing?" I hiss at him, just so he can hear.
"What? You actually would be a good captain." He shrugs.
"Huh?" I say, pulling a surprised face.
"So is Summer the captain over there?" Miss Samuels says.
"No-" I start to say as I look at Hugh but he gives me what I think is an encouraging smile which I highly doubt because Hugh is not someone be who would pull that face at me. He gives me a light push and before I know it I'm facing the opposite team's captain.
