Raymond Elliot
"Hi." I walk over to someone in particular. Summer looks up at me.
"Hey." She says.
"Uh, do you have anything on after school today?"
"No.... Not today." She gets a book out of her locker, glancing at it and putting it in her bag.
"Oh.... I was just wondering.... If you wanted to......" I rack my brain for something to replace the words, 'hang out.' "Uh, go for a surf?"
"What?"
"Do you want to go surfing with me?"
"Uh...." She glances at her phone, and shrugs. "Sure." I'm pretty sure this is exactly what's on my face but to say I'm shocked is an understatement.
"Really?"
"Yeah. Sure." Summer repeats.
"Cool. I'll.... I'll see you after school. I'll text you."
"'Kay. See you." Summer says and walks away. I really feel like doing a dance right now, she said a frickin' yes!! Huh. I guess you never can give up.
I slap a smile on my face and walk into homeroom, and sit down where Luke and a few other guys from my football team sit.
"Good day?" One of the guys say.
"Yeah." I grin.
"Really?" Luke raises an eyebrow.
"Well, today just must be a good day." I shrug.
"Says the guy who says he hates Mondays." One of the guys says.
"Ah well, people change, don't they?" I say, as I get out my phone.
"And.... Shall we mark the roll?" My homeroom teacher shouts as she walks into the classroom. She starts marking the roll. "...Luke?"
"Here." Luke replies.
"....Raymond?"
"Yup." I say, as our football coach barges into the room. My homeroom teacher glares at him.
"Sorry to interrupt, but can I borrow these boys?" Coach indicates to me and the guys.
"Sure." My homeroom teacher replies, and I get up and follow coach outside.
"For the big game this weekend, we've got to train as much as we can, and we need all boys at practises. We were gonna have a practise tomorrow but a few of the guys can't make it so we have a practise today. You all good with that?" Coach says after we all walk out of the classroom.
"Fine with me." Luke says and all the other guys mumble in agreement.
"And you, Elliot?" Coach turns to me. I look up from the floor.
"Uh...... I-I don't think I can make it today."
"And why not?" Coach stares at me.
"Uh.... I had uh, plans."
"Uh-huh." Coach grumbles. "Well those plans will have to wait, because the game this weekend is important, and you have to be at practises. Am I clear?"
"But I-"
"Elliot, don't make me repeat what I said." Coach says and walks away. I sigh. What am I gonna do now?
"What do you have on after school, man?" Luke asks after all the guys have walked in.
"Summer finally agreed to hang out with me."
"She did? What you doing?"
"We're.... Surfing." I mumble.
"Good idea, why didn't you think of that earlier?"
"Yeah... I don't know. Anyway, I don't think I can make it to practise today." I sigh.
"But you-"
"Boys! I don't think it takes that long- what are you doing? Come back in right now!" Our homeroom teacher snaps and I grumble a 'yes miss' and walk in and take a seat.
***
"Wait, so you can't make it?"
"Nope." I say as I take a bite from my burger.
"But you have to. Coach said-"
"Yeah yeah, I know. But I can't go to practise today. It's important and I can't miss it for anything." I say.
"Even for one of the most important games?" One of the guys says at the lunch table.
"Yeah." I grumble. Someone lets out a low whistle.
"Whoever it is you're hanging out with must be real important, man."
"Who said I was hanging out with someone?" I mutter.
"Well it's pretty obvious, if you had plans by yourself, you would've just went to practise."
"Well.... Whatever, fine. I'm hanging out with someone." I sigh. The guys all whoops and whistle.
"Who's the lucky girl?"
"Who said she was a girl?" I snap.
"Of course she's a girl."
"Well, okay, I'm hanging out with a girl. End of story. No sequels."
***
I jog towards the beach, immediately I head over towards my shed, and unlock it, and get my surfboard out, as well as taking off my shirt as I already had my swim shorts on. As I step out, I look around the beach. There are only a few people dotted here and there. I scan my eyes over everyone, making sure I don't miss her. I finally spot the blonde haired girl with a bikini on sitting down on the sand, with her surfboard next to her. I walk over to her, and when she notices me, she stands up, brushing the sand off her.
"Hey." She says.
"Hi." I say.
"Should we go?"
"Yeah, sure." She says and we start walking. We walk in a silence, the only sound is the crashing waves in front of us.
"You know- Ow!" I wince as someone bumps into me. I fall onto the sand, with the person I bumped into on top of me. The person immediately rolls off me.
"Sorry!" The girl says. Wait... That voice sounds very familiar....
"Sophie?" I stutter as I get up.
"Raymond?" Sophie says. "Oh hey!"
"Hey!"
"What are you doing here?" Sophie asks.
"I'm just going... For a surf."
"Can I come with?" Sophie says as I hear someone clear their throat next to me. I spin around to face Summer.
"Uh, sorry, I'm just... Summer's teaching me a few things today, you know... Like some uh, surfing things... And uh, yeah." I lie.
"Oh." Sophie says and glances at Summer, as if she's just noticed she was there. "Well then see you around, Ray." Sophie says, stepping closer, and embracing me in a hug. I tense up. Summer's watching us, with her arms crossed, and she's turned her head towards the ocean. When I pull away, Sophie walks away, and Summer's already started walking into the water without me. I run to catch up.
