Raymond Elliot
"Oh, Raymond!" I turn around to see Phoebe jogging after me.
"Oh hey." I say. I stuff my hands into the pockets of my jeans and look at her.
"Oh, about last time..... You know how... You know how you wanted me to... Help you?"
"Yeah?"
"How exactly... Could I help you?"
"So you're agreeing?" I ask, quirking an eyebrow.
"Sure." She puts a hand on her waist, tilting her head slightly to the side.
"Really? Are you being serious?"
"Yeah." She looks at her manicured nails. "So how?"
"Well...." I say. I don't even know what I'm going to say. I didn't even plan this out. "I just..... I just kind of needed someone to help me..... But I never.... I didn't really plan this out."
"Oh...." She says.
"Wait, didn't you two have a fight yesterday?"
"Yeah. She seems happy with Sean. I don't want her to be happy." She shrugs.
What?!
"So you're saying that.... She won't be happy with me?"
"What? No! That's not what I mean!" She says. "I mean.... Like, what I mean is..." She stutters for a good minute until I interrupt.
"Forget it. I don't need your help." I say and walk away from her.
***
"Is that you, Raymond?" I hear mom's voice from the kitchen when I close our front door.
"Yeah, it's me." I say and head upstairs and straight into my room. As I lay on my bed, I keep thinking about what Phoebe said earlier. Is Summer really happy right now? And will she not be happy with me? Shaking my head from all these thoughts, I grab a few books from my bag and try to get some homework done for tomorrow. Then my hand reaches something I totally forgot about. The literature assignment that I decided I was going to do with Summer when we were dating. I take a look at the sheet, and grab my phone, and scroll down my contacts to 'S' and tap on Summer. Letting out a sigh, I tap out a few words.
Do you wanna work on that literature assignment?
My finger hovers over the send button, but I force myself to send it. Moments later, a reply comes.
Sure, when?
I'm surprised that she even replied. But I guess we have to work on this assignment at one point or another.
I dunno, would now be good?
I text and grab the sheet that says what we need to do for the assignment. My phone vibrates again to notify another text.
Sure. My house or yours?
I don't know, what do u wanna do?
I don't know. Just come to mine if you like.
Ok. I'll be there soon.
I stand up, getting a few things I need for the assignment and heading down the stairs.
***
I knock a few times, and the door swings open to reveal Summer. She's in some high waist shorts and a t-shirt, with her long blonde hair, cascading down her back. Summer always looked beautiful even when she wasn't trying.
"Hey." She says.
"Hi." I say, as I step into the familiar house.
"So, um, let's go to my room." She says.
"Sure." When we head into the room, she sits on her bed, with me standing awkwardly at the doorway.
"You can sit, you know." She says, and I grab a chair and sit myself down. We sit in silence for a bit, me staring at her so intently for some reason I don't know. "So, what did we need to do for the assignment?" She interrupts me from me staring at her.
"Oh, um. It says on the sheet....."
"Yeah, I know that. I mean what are we going to do?"
"Um..... Work?" I say and she gives me a flat look. "Nah I'm joking."
"So, I think we should first start off with... Wait, I'll get my laptop." I watch as she gets out of a pink case, a MacBook Air. She types a few things in and motions for me to sit down on her bed next to her. I slowly head over and watch silently as she opens up a new document, typing up a title.
Literature Assignment
"Um, Raymond?" Summer says. "So.... What first?"
***
"There. All done." Summer says, saving the document. We sit in silence for a bit.
"Won't your boyfriend be bit... You know, if he figures I'm here?" I blurt.
"What?"
"Won't your boyfri-"
"I heard you the first time." Summer says. "And it's none of your business."
"But it is if he gets mad at you... Or-"
"He won't, okay?" Summer says, and we both stay silent and then I hear a small, "Besides, you're a family friend."
