Raymond Elliot
"Uh, hi." There's a knock at the door, and I see Sean Carter walk into my class.
"Oh! S-Sean?" Miss Daily, my English teacher stammers.
"Oh, hello, um, Miss-"
"Daily. Miss Daily."
"Oh, hello, Miss Daily." Sean says.
"Are you here to see your girlfriend, or...?"
"No, actually. I wanted to talk to...." He looks around the room. "Raymond Elliot?"
"Oh? I wonder whatever for?" Miss Daily says. "Stand up, Raymond." I stand up, brushing my fringe aside, and force myself to look at Summer's boyfriend.
"Is it okay if I just borrow him for a few minutes?" Sean asks, looking pointedly at me.
"Um, sure." Miss Daily looks at Sean as if he's like an angel and so are all the other girls in my class. "Raymond, go." Miss Daily says, and I look at the ground, so no one can see me rolling my eyes.
"Thank you, Miss Daily." Sean says and I follow him outside, into the hallway, and I lean on the lockers.
"Um, hi. I don't know if we've met but I'm-"
"Sean Carter, yeah. I know." I mutter.
"Oh, and I just, heard you're a really close friend of Summer's."
"Yeah. But she doesn't need me, I mean, she's clearly got you now."
"Um, yeah." Sean says, taken aback a bit. We lapse into silence.
"So, why did you want to see me?" I cross my arms over my chest, slightly annoyed.
"Oh, so I just wanted you to help me out here, since you two are pretty close friends." Sean says. Friends? We would've been more than that if he hadn't come along. I know I seem clingy and pathetic, but whatever. I lost Summer because of a stupid photo, and now I can't have her back, or even have a chance, when she's dating Sean Carter of all people.
"How... Exactly?"
"Oh, just a few things-" Sean asks me a few questions and I just shrug in most of them and say I don't know. Which I really don't. I mean, how am I supposed to know what Summer's favourite Starbucks drink is? I knew her favourite drink when we were younger, but I have no idea if it's still that same. How am I supposed to know if we hardly spend any time together? "Oh, thanks for your... Help."
"I didn't even do much, anyway." I shrug, and head inside. Sean comes after me, and grabs my shoulder, and I turn around to face him.
"Is it alright if we keep this a secret? From Summer."
"What?"
"Could we? I mean, I'm not asking much, I just want you to keep quiet about it." Sean says.
"Whatever." I say, and walk into the classroom.
***
"Oh, um, hi? Phoebe?" I say, approaching Phoebe.
"Oh hey-" Phoebe trails off and clears her throat. "Raymond."
"Seriously?" I lean against a few lockers. "Why are all of you mad at me?"
"Maybe the fact that you cheated on-"
"I didn't." I interrupt.
"Yeah, you did. I saw the picture, you-"
"No, you guys all have it all mucked up. It's all wrong. You've got it all wrong."
"Then what?" Phoebe crosses her arms.
"I didn't cheat on her, it was for a photo."
"I can tell."
"No! But I wasn't meant to kiss her! The girl, Sophie just kissed me and someone got a picture for the newspaper because this person said that we should kiss and yeah. This happens." I say.
"Whatever." Phoebe says, swinging her bag over her shoulder. "I've got to go see your ex." She starts to walk away. I jog after her, grabbing her arm.
"Phoebe. Please help me."
"How would I help you? Why would I help you?" Phoebe turns around to face me again, an irritated look on her face.
"Um...." I bite my lip. "I'll figure that out when you agree to help me. But you have to believe me, Phoebe."
"Why? What do you think makes me believe Summer more than you? Maybe the fact that I could clearly see what's going on in that picture." Phoebe snaps.
"Please, I.... I'll do.... I don't know, just believe me and help me."
"What makes you think I'll believe you over Summer?"
"I....." I stammer. "I don't know, please just believe me."
"Why?"
"Please just stop asking questions and help me change Summer's mind."
"What? Why?" Phoebe asks. This girl's got a lot of questions.
"Just... I don't know, okay?! Just... Please believe me!"
"No, I'm not going to." Phoebe snatches her arm out of my grasp and walks away without looking back. I sigh. What did I expect? Of course she wouldn't believe me. I mean, she would never believe me over Summer.
