My dad was waving at us from the yacht as we were approaching it. His hands were full and my aunt and mom were carrying both baskets. We weren't going ashore for a while, that was for sure.

I didn't mention those creepy looks of the two men in the restaurant to my sister. While we were walking back to the harbor, I unobtrusively checked behind us to make sure, we in fact weren't followed.

Those eyes were not regular eyes. It was as if they were looking through me, which made it even more uncomfortable. Not to mention that weird ass dog, that looked like it was possessed by something.

I took a deep breath at that thought and tried my best to put it off. The big Salish Sea was draining me of my strength already, I did not need to torture myself some more.

Right after we entered the yacht my dad pulled the rope and freed us from the harbor, so the captain aimed us outward. And there it started again - this uneasy feeling in my stomach.

„I'm going downstairs, let me know when you guys need help with cooking!", I exclaimed, before taking the narrow steps to the cabin, where my little privacy space was. My bed.

I lied down and took my little round mirror.

Damn, I thought. I look tired.
My blue eyes were surrounded by a dark shadow. I exhaled and took the brush from the implemented shelf next to me to comb through my light brown hair.

Another week on the open sea, before we would return back home. Hopefully, it would end early.

End early?

I giggled at myself while striking my brush through my ends, as I felt something burning on my collarbone. The pain intensified so much that I had to get up.

What the -...?

My hand moved over my skin and I looked down at my bed, to find the cause. Skeptically looking around, I felt the pain in between my breasts.

I immediately grabbed for the necklace lifting it before my eyes.

This prism-shaped ruby was flashing from its centre - and also heating up.

„Daaad...?", I yelled with a concerned tone in my voice, while jumping out of my bed. As I reached the deck he was already facing me.

„Dad, my necklace is heati-"

I couldn't finish the sentence, I was cut off by the sounds of gunshots.

My sister started screaming together with my aunt and mom, throwing themselves on the ground of the deck. My dad grabbed my head and pulled me down forcefully, so that I hit the floor. The deafening sounds of shattering glass filled the air while the shards rained on us. Above our heads the bullets were piercing everything that got in their way.

„Everybody stay on the ground!", my father roared, still covering my head.

For a short while the danger seemed to be over and my dad whispered my name. „River!"

I looked up with a startled expression on my face, as he continued. „You and Riley hide in the sea. Jump off and hide in the sea until this is over. I need you to be safe!"

„What about you and mom?", I cried.

„We'll be alright. You two hide until I come and get you both! Now crawl over and disappear!"

I did as I was told. I creeped over the wooden deck to my sister whose eyes were bloodshot red from crying.

„Riley! Come with me!", I whispered strictly that she obeyed without hesitation. We climbed down the front as I heard massive footsteps entering the yacht from the back.

„Good evening", the strange voice of a man said.

„Who the hell are you?", my dad asked furiously.

A muffled clout sounded and I could hear my mother scream.

„We have to help!", Riley urged, her voice cracking. I tried to hold on to her, while the waves were breaking above us.

„Dad told me to protect you!", I insisted as silently as I could.

„Where is the girl with the necklace?", the man yelled from the deck and shut us both up.

Rileys eyes gazed at me. „They are talking about you!?", she screeched in a muffled tone.

„There is no girl!", my dad lied. I could tell he was wounded by the weakness in his voice.

My tears welled in my eyes and I squinched them in despair.

The necklace? They were after the necklace?

I had a sinking feeling, that those guys were the ones in the restaurant, who were looking at me weirdly. I tilted my head back, staring up at the railing of the deck.

They were armed and ruthless, they did not care if they had to kill anybody to get what they wanted.

Before they harmed anyone, I had to get rid of this jewel.

I have to give them the necklace!, I thought and tried to climb up the railing of the yacht. „Riley! Stay here!", I demanded, as a strong wave tore me down and pulled me into the water.
