In the dance of life, intelligence is the melody that resonates through the wolf's song.

Kaven's hand rested on my shoulder until Nathan had stormed out of sight to check on Keoni. The silence after his absence got so loud it became uncomfortable. Specifically Anakin who had probably felt like being hit by a truck.

Kaven's exhale was the first thing that broke the silence.

„Come with me," he pleaded and grabbed my hand. I could feel his warmth radiating on my own skin which made me a little more calm as he led me back to the front door and we walked around the house, towards the beach.

„Where are we going?," I asked quietly, still being held by him. His grip didn't loosen up, he clasped my hand even firmer.

„We have a spot where we chill when we have nothing to do."

It was dark. Very dark.

We should have brought a flashlight or something.

How are we going to find our way back home?

I can't see in the dark and Kaven can't either. At least, that's what I know about him. Maybe I will get new insights now and he'll confess that he can fly or that he has secret gills. Who knows.

I'm open to surprises. I don't think that anything can shock me any more. Not even any bad news at this point.

We walked along the pebbled beach, the crickets joining the crunching sounds of our steps over the dry branches and stones with their chirping when in the distance the light of a lantern appeared.

Kaven suspiciously scanned the area around us before letting go of my hand and I knew what he was checking.

„Shouldn't we stay near the house? What if those dogs come back?," I asked in a little worried voice.

„Nathan and Anakin are at home, so Keoni is safe," he replied turning his back on me. He was searching in the dark for something and I watched him as he did.

A large unearthed circle around a black center spot appeared under the dim light of the lantern.

A fire place to sit around with a couple of people.

This small area looked quite worn out which meant, they used this place quite often.

„What about us?," I asked. „We're out here in the dark with no protection."

In that moment Kaven lit up a match and lowered it to the ground. He was indeed preparing a fire. As the flames grew bigger his face became more visible again and I stood there unconsciously staring at his golden-rusty skin in the lights.

„Your necklace will heat up if they come, but they most likely won't, judging by the story you told. You repelled them." He dug out two cushions from under a tight plastic wrap and placed them on the sandy soil around the fire. „As if I would allow something happening to you, while I am around," he added staring straight into my eyes and simultaneously gesturing me to take a seat.

My heart started banging against my ribcage and I clenched my fists in nervousness.

This traitorous heart. I am so angry with it.

My legs moved stiffly over to the seat next to him while I tried my best not to show how tensed up I was. Not because I was scared but because-

Because...?
