Young adult siblings were... complicated, to say the least.
It wasn't like your age gaps were huge, you were 29 while Carmen was 27 and Carlitos was 23.
But it was weird to see how you were already married with kids, and these two had barely even started their lives. Carlitos was finishing college and Carmen was engaged.
You noticed other things too, like how natural they acted around each other. It took you a good two years to feel like a big sister to them, but they had it naturally.
There wasn't some deep jealousy you had for them, but it was nice to see how growing up with someone changes the way you act around them. You hoped your kids had that too.
What you hoped your kids didn't have was their aunt and uncle's lack of communication, or the fondness for yelling at each other at 11 am.
"Carmen, why the fuck would you pour the milk before the cereal?!" "Because I don't like milk and want to make sure I don't have too much or the cereal gets soggy!" Arguments like this are what made you want to strangle them.
You only listened to it for about five more seconds until you had enough. "Can you two please be quiet! For fucks sake, I can't even eat cereal in peace!" They both kind of looked at you and mumbled out apologies.
You rubbed your temples, wishing Katsuki didn't have work today so he could deal with them. The kids were at school too, so it was just the three of you.
Before you could start lecturing them again Pumpkin decided to start kicking. "I know baby, your tía and tío are acting like niños." While you were talking to your unborn child, it was directed to the other adults in the room.
"God, does motherhood make you like this? You sound like Abuela." Carmen snickered while eating. "Agreed. You're not even thirty and you've mastered the art of scolding. Was mom like this when she was pregnant with me?"
You and Carmen both sort of froze at that. No one asked about your mother before. It was a touchy topic for sure, but no one ever just brought it up out of the blue.
"Well, that feels like a question for y/n." "Why me?" "I was four, I don't remember what the fuck I was doing at four." You sighed, but she was right. Lucky for Carlitos, you retained memories well. Even the ones you wanted to forget.
"I mean, she was always nice. She didn't yell or do much, but I guess it's because she was so young." They both nodded, enjoyed hearing about their mother. "I wish I could tell you more, I do, but there's not much to tell."
It was silent for a bit, no one knowing what to say next. Thinking about your mother was hard, but you knew it would have to happen eventually. "So what your saying is, all your aggressiveness comes from Abuela." You laughed at Carmen, but it was true.
"You know, I think there's something that we can look at." You got up, and the two just shrugged and followed you upstairs. You looked up at the attic string, pulling it down and moving for the ladder.
"Carlitos, go up there and find a blue box labeled 'For y/n.' It should be in the left corner near the old cribs." While Carlitos was going to complain about why he had to do it, he reminded himself that you were pregnant and Carmen had noodle arms.
He climbed the ladder and started to search, and while he did that Carmen leaned on you. "Why?" "Cause you're tall and I'm sleepy." You sighed before patting her head. She was a big baby.
After a couple of minutes, Carlitos yelled "Found it!" And appeared with the blue box. Once he carried it down the three of you traveled back downstairs. It was funny to see the three of you sitting on the floor like children opening presents on Christmas.
"Abuela gave me this when I was twenty-five. She said I could open it when I was ready, but I honestly wanted to wait and open it with you two." They both overdramatically awwed and leaned on you.
You wiped the layer of dust off the box before opening it. Inside laid things for a small child, from toys to dresses and shoes. "Why did she give you a box of junk?" "I think this is my stuff." You pulled out one of the dresses, surprised it was still in good condition.
"I remember that dress!" Carmen said upon further inspection. "I had the same one. We would wear them and sing Mama that song we made about snakes." You snickered at the memory, the "Sneaky Snake" song was truly a masterpiece of its time.
"There's a DVD in here," Carlitos said while picking it up, but it quickly got snatched by Carmen. "Who even owns a DVD player anymore?" "I own a DVD player Carmen." She gave you a blank stare before handing you the disk.
You got up and turned the DVD player on, waiting a bit before putting the DVD in and turning on the tv. You grabbed the remote and sat on the couch because apparently, Pumpkin didn't like the floor.
When you pressed play, you were surprised to see a small you in the camera. "And who are you?" "I'm y/n!" It shocked you to not only see a little you but the sound of your mother's voice behind the camera.
"How old are you y/n?" "I'm four- no! I'm five now, right Mama?" You assumed she nodded because you smiled and congratulated yourself. "Dude, Kayoko looks exactly like baby you." You kind of zoned Carlitos out and paid attention to the video.
The video changed to you and Carmen sitting with her dad and talking. "Tell mommy how much you want to be a big sister Carmen." "Yeah, I want baby sister." Carlitos gave Carmen a look, but she just shrugged. "In my defense, I didn't think I was going to get a little sibling yet."
The video changed again, this time it was you and Carmen cooking with Abuela. Then drawing with your cousins, playing dress-up, at the park, Carmen crying because she spilled her juice, and a ton of other memories.
It was sweet, to see the loving family you lived with as a child. As the videos kept going, you got older. You were six when you saw the first video with your mom in it.
She was sitting on the couch, visibly pregnant, with you and Carmen on either side of her. "Baby in there?" "Yes Carmen, your baby brother or sister is in here." Carmen poked her stomach, and you both laughed when you saw the baby kick.
Most of the clips after that were your mother, Abuela lecturing her about birth, you and Carmen making a playroom for the baby, their dad setting up the crib, and her baby shower.
The next clip was different though. It started with the camera pointing at the ground and the sound of talking. "Just get the girls ready, I'll be down soon." A door closing was heard until the camera was recording your mother.
You could tell she was holding it by the angle and slight camera shakes. "Hi y/n, it's me, Mama. Oh god, that sounds stupid you know who I am... Sorry, this is just super awkward. But, hello sweetheart."
You couldn't even speak, only listen to her soft voice. "If your Abuela listened to me, then that means you're still connected with us and you're older than twenty-five. I wanted to wait until you were older to watch this."
"The baby is due in a week, and I want to be excited, I do, but I know I'm not doing well. The doctors don't know if I'll make it or not... But that's not the point. The point is, your father might take you away from us if I'm gone."
She stopped to hold back tears, but she continued. "Oh, how I wish Andres was your dad. He treats you so well, he truly loves you. But sadly, that isn't the case. Legally, your real father has custody of you if something happens to me."
"I want you to know that if you do get taken from me, that I love you so much. We all do, and I hope you know that. I know that you'll grow into a wonderful woman and be happy. I want you to look out for your sister, she's a handful. And the new baby too, they're gonna love you."
She looked behind her before turning back to the camera. "I have to go, Carmen's getting her ears pierced today, but I love you Mija. Take care." After that, the video cut off.
The room was silent. No one knew what to say or do. You were feeling a lot of emotions at once, but the only thing you could really do was silently cry.
A therapy session was definitely needed.
