Private Ivy League research institution Yale University is located in New Haven, Connecticut. The Collegiate School was established in 1701, making it the third-oldest higher education institution in the country and one of the most famous in the whole globe.
The Collegiate School, which was chartered by the Connecticut Colony, was founded in 1701 by clergy to train Congregational preachers before relocating to New Haven in 1716. By the time of the American Revolution, the curriculum had expanded from its original focus on theology and holy languages to include humanities and sciences. By giving the first PhD in the United States in 1861 and establishing as a university in 1887, the institution moved into graduate and professional education throughout the 19th century. With the fast growth of the campus and scientific research after 1890, Yale's professor and student populations increased.
Twelve professional schools, the original undergraduate college, the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and a total of fourteen component institutions make up Yale. The Yale Corporation is in charge of running the institution, although the faculty at each school controls the curriculum and degree plans. The institution has a campus in West Haven, sports facilities in western New Haven, a core campus in downtown New Haven, as well as woods and nature reserves all across New England. The university has the second-largest endowment of any university as of 2021 with a $42.3 billion valuation. The third-largest academic library in the United States, servicing all constituent institutions, is the Yale University Library, which has more than 15 million books. The Yale Bulldogs are the intercollegiate athletic team for the NCAA Division I Ivy League.
