Clark Gable starred as Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty and as Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind. He was nominated for an Academy Award for both movies.

American actor Clark Gable was often referred to as "The King of Hollywood." Over the course of a 37-year career, he appeared in more than 60 films of various genres, with three of those decades spent in the position of the main man. Gable made his last on-screen cameo as an elderly cowboy in The Misfits, which was released posthumously in 1961, before passing away from a heart attack at the age of 59.

Gable, who was born and bred in Ohio, moved to Hollywood and started working as an extra in silent movies between 1924 and 1926. He moved up the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ladder, landing his first starring role in He appeared in the movie Dance, Fools, Dance with Joan Crawford, who asked him to do the character. He became MGM's greatest male star because of his part in the romantic drama Red Dust with reigning sex icon Jean Harlow. It Happened One Night, a romantic comedy directed by Frank Capra and starring Claudette Colbert, earned Gable the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Gable was one of Hollywood's most dependable box office draws, making Quigley Publishing's annual Top Ten Money Making Stars Poll sixteen times. The American Film Institute ranked him as the ninth best male movie star of early American film. Many of the most well-known women of the day were his co-stars in films. He collaborated with Joan Crawford in eight movies since she was one of his favorite actresses to work with. He collaborated with Myrna Loy seven times, while six of his projects included Jean Harlow. Additionally, he co-starred in three films with Norma Shearer and Ava Gardner and four features with Lana Turner.
