Shane sat staring at Lori. She was currently talking to some friends while waiting for Carl to get out of school. He knew he had to go tell her.

"Lori" Her head snapped towards him as she recognized his voice.

"Shane what are you doing here?"

Shane sighed pulling her away from her friends. "Something happened Lori. I don't know how to tell you this."

"What? What's wrong?" She questioned.

"Rick's been shot. There was a shoot out and we didn't see the third guy. He was rushed to the nearest hospital. He's in surgery now."

Lori's face dropped. She turned towards the school where Carl was currently exiting with a smile on his face.

"How am I going to tell him?" She said with tears in her eyes. "God and Cali. It's her birthday and her father's just been shot."

"Hey it's alright Lori. I'll go to the high school and get her. You just worry about telling Carl." Shane said rubbing Lori's back attempting to calm her.

Lori nodded wiping her tears before walking over to her oblivious son. Shane watched Carl's expression change as his mother continued talking. His heart was breaking for the little guy. He couldn't even begin to imagine how bad it was going to be when he tells Cali.

The ride to the high school was short and anxiety filled. As Shane pulled up out front he noticed the herd of teenagers rushing out the main doors. He stepped out of his car looking for the tall brunette that had been on his mind for months. It wasn't long before he spotted her laughing at something her best friend had said.

Jade of course was the first one to notice Shane's presence. She internally squealed. She was so proud of her best friend for finally admitting that she had feelings for him.

"Looks like lover boy can't get enough of you." The blonde joked.

"What?" Cali asked confused before following her friends line of sight. "What the hell is he doing here?"

Jade shrugged. "I'll meet you at my car."

Cali nodded before walking towards Shane. She could tell from his expression that something was wrong. He looked extremely nervous.

"What are you doing here?"

"Will you come with me to go talk somewhere?" questioned Shane. He didn't want to tell her this terrible news in front of the whole school. But Cali being her stubborn self refused.

"No Shane you know I have plans with Jade tonight. Just tell me whatever it is now."

"Cal please." Shane begged. He just wanted to be alone with her. He knew he wouldn't be able to comfort her the way he wanted to in front of so many other people.

"No Shane. Please just tell me now."

Shane sighed grabbing her hands and gently rubbing them. "There was something bad that happened today at work. Your dad -" he trailed off trying to find the courage.

"My dad what? What's wrong with my dad?" Cali questioned getting worried now.

"He was shot."

"What? Is he okay?" she exclaimed as tears began to fall.

"We had to rush him to the hospital. He's in surgery now." Shane replied wiping away Cali's tears.

"He's going to pull through right? He has too? Right Shane?" She cried.

Shane nodded pulling her into a hug. Cali silently sobbed into his chest.

"Let me take you to the hospital. Your mom and Carl are probably there by now."

Cali said nothing but followed Shane to his car. She couldn't speak. All she could think about was the possibility of her dad dying. It made her sick. Cali couldn't imagine her life without him in it.
