"So let me get this straight if I have to go to the bathroom I have to take someone with me?" Cali asked looking between Shane and her mother.
She wouldn't be following that rule. That's literally so awkward. What if you had to do something other than pee? The other person is just going to stand there and listen to you?
"It's the safest option. No one wonders off alone." Shane nodded. "I also want both of you to have your knives on you at all times."
"Why can't I have a gun?" The brunette questioned.
"Guns are a last resort. Your knife is quieter."
"Whatever. I'm going to go read in the Jeep." She shrugged turning to walk away.
"Hey sweetheart wait!" Lori called out. "Why don't you go get to know Amy? I think the two of you would really get along."
"I'm not going to make friends with someone when they're just going to die."
"Cali!" Lori exclaimed with wide eyes. Her jaw hung open as she watched her oldest child walk away. "Why would she say something like that?"
Shane sighed awkwardly scratching the back of his neck. He was debating if he should tell Lori what happened with Jade. He didn't want her to treat Cali any differently after she knew the truth.
"She killed Jade." He blurted out immediately regretting it once he saw the look on Lori's face. "Jade was one of them. She tried to attack Cali."
"Oh my god." Lori cried. She couldn't believe her daughter had to do that. And poor Jade. She always liked the Montgomery girl even though she shamelessly flirted with her husband from time to time.
"When I went to pick her up I found her sitting over Jade's body crying."
"I can't believe this." Lori sighed sitting down on a log that was near the small fire pit. The group had made a good amount of progress setting up camp.
"Listen Lori, we just have to let her get through this. You know how she gets when she's upset. She'll come to us when she's ready. We can't push her."
"I know. I just can't believe how awful the last couple of weeks have been." She cried putting her face in her hands. "First Rick gets shot and now we're living in some kind of apocalypse."
"Hey. Look at me." Shane says crouching down in front of Lori and reassuringly holding her hand. "I'm not going to let anything happen to Cali, Carl, or you. Okay?"
The Grimes woman nodded looking up at Shane. She couldn't help but admire his features. She had never noticed how handsome Shane was before. Lori didn't know where these thoughts were coming from. She didn't have time to think about it anymore more because Carl was calling her name.
Shane sighed heavily standing back up. He looked over at his Jeep and could see Cali glaring at him from the passenger seat. He muttered a quick curse before making his way over to her.
"You pissed at me or something?" The older man questioned opening the door.
Cali simply scoffed rolling her eyes. She didn't look up from her book. "Why would I be mad Shane?"
"Don't bullshit with me Cal. If you're pissed just say that."
"Fine!" She snapped slamming her book closed. "What the fuck was that with my mother?"
"Language." He muttered. "And I don't know what the hell you're talking about. We were just talking."
"You were 'just talking' my ass. If you were just talking then why the hell was she looking at you like that?"
"I don't know Cal. I was just reassuring her that I'd protect all of you." The man shrugged getting annoyed.
"You didn't need to touch her." The girl mumbled folding her arms over her chest.
Shane laughed and leaned closer to the girl's face. Cali's breath caught in her throat at how close they were to each other. She was getting angry from the look of amusement on Shane's face.
"Are you jealous that I held your mom's hand?" He smirked looking down at the beautiful brunette.
"No." Cali stuttered feeling Shane's hand slowly slide up her bare thigh. She quickly glanced around making sure no one was looking at them.
"Good." Shane whispered in her ear. "Because you have nothing to be jealous of."
Cali let out a breath of relief as she watched Shane walk away from the Jeep. She watched as he went over and began talking with an older man and a younger guy wearing a baseball cap. The guy wearing the hat looked like he wasn't much older then her.
The Grimes girl still hadn't bothered to learn anyone else's name. She had only met Andrea and Amy briefly and she knew Carol and Sophia from the highway. But other than that she knew no one and she didn't really have any want to get to know anyone else. She was perfectly fine just staying by her brother and Shane's sides.
Shane was driving her crazy. Cali wanted him but she knew it was wrong. She couldn't be with him especially not around this many people. It didn't matter that the world had changed and age wasn't that big of a deal anymore. Cali knew some of the people in this camp would talk.
She knew her mother would have a problem with it. Lori would definitely turn everyone against her daughter and Shane. Plus Cali could see the way her mother was looking at Shane. It made her furious. Her dad hadn't even been gone long and she was flirting with someone else.
Cali couldn't help but feel a little jealous. There was a small part of her that felt like Shane would rather be with Lori. After all the two were close in age. Their relationship wouldn't be as frowned upon as Cali and Shane's.
