The Grimes girl shot up out of her sleeping bag with a loud shriek. Her face was pale and her eyes were wide. The hair on the back of her neck was stuck to her skin thanks to how much she was sweating.
Cali hadn't had a nightmare since she was a young child. But that night she relived killing Jade.
"Cali?" Lori yelled rushing out of her own sleeping bag and towards her daughter. "What is it? Are you hurt?"
The brunette couldn't speak. All she managed to get out between her sobs was Jade's name. Lori didn't know what to do to help her daughter. She brought the girl into a hug hoping it would help calm her.
Before Lori could ask her daughter another question their tent was being unzipped. Shane's concerned face appeared inside the tent taking in the scene.
"What's going on?" The Walsh man questioned.
"I think she had a nightmare. She's too worked up to talk." Lori replied brushing some of Cali's hair out of her face.
Shane sighed before fully entering the tent. He slowly crouched down in front of Cali. His heart broke at the sad expression on her face. "Just breathe Cal. Everything's okay."
Cali released another loud sob before flinging herself into Shane arms. "I want my dad." She cried breaking Shane's heart even more. He knew Cali would never forgive him for what he did.
The two adults stared at each other. Neither of them knew what to say to comfort the crying teen. Lori's eyes were glued on Shane's hands.
She was uncomfortable with how low his hand was on her daughter's back but she kept quiet. Lori didn't think too hard on it. She told herself it was just Shane being a good guy and comforting her.
"Why don't you try to go back to sleep?" Lori spoke causing Shane's eyes to leave Cali and go to her.
Cali didn't move from the older man's arms. She continued to silently cry into his chest. The pain from losing her dad and best friend was slowly killing her. Cali didn't know how she was supposed to go on without them.
"I can take her to my tent." Shane broke the silence. "That way you can go back to sleep and we won't wake Carl."
"I don't know Shane." Lori sighed. "I don't want to bother you. You need your sleep too."
"It's fine. Cal can stay with me until she calms down." Shane smiled reassuringly. "What do you say Cal. Do you wanna go to my tent?"
The brunette in his arms simply nodded. She didn't even bother to look at her mother as Shane slipped her sneakers on. The Walsh man's hand was firmly placed on the girl's waist as the other unzipped the tent. Shane's grip on Cali didn't falter as he led her out of the tent.
It wasn't until the two were in the safety of Shane's personal tent that he allowed himself to lean in and gently kiss her forehead. "Come on pretty girl. You need to get some sleep."
Cali was silent as she laid down on Shane's makeshift bed. She watched as he stripped out of his clothes leaving him in just his boxers and his 22 chain. Cali didn't think she'd ever seen him without that stupid necklace on.
Shane's body laid next to Cali's for 20 minutes before he finally worked up the nerve to wrap his arm around her. When he finally did he let out a huge sigh as he felt the girl curl into his side. Her head turned to lay upon his chest as her one arm moved to rest across his lower stomach.
It was in that position that the Grime's girl was finally able to fall asleep. While in Shane's arms she slept peacefully. There wasn't a single nightmare in sight. Both Shane and Cali wished that they could sleep like this every night.
