Shane had heard the news about the virus going around but he didn't think it would affect him. The main cases that were in the news were on the other side of the country. He wasn't worried about it until he went into work that day.
He went into work a little later than usual because he wanted to help Lori out with Carl and Cali. That day he volunteered to take Carl to school so Lori could clean up around the house.
When Shane got to work he noticed that his coworkers and even some of the prisoners were more on edge than they usually were.
"Hey man can you go check on the new guy we just brought in? He's been complaining about being sick." Bill asked as Shane was about to sit at his desk.
Rolling his eyes and muttering a few obscenities under his breath he responded. "Uh yeah sure."
As Shane walked towards the holding cell he noticed that the prisoner was sitting hunched over groaning.
"Hey man you okay?" Shane questioned walking closer to the bars. He received no answer but the prisoner quickly sat up and lunged towards him growling. Shane immediately backed away confused. He attempted to talk to the man but just heard growling in return.
Getting annoyed Shane walked back out to the main office area only to see everyone rushing around.
"Hey Bill what the hell's going on? There's something wrong with that prisoner. I think we gotta get him a doctor or something."
"Don't matter. We got to get the hell out of here." Bill said grabbing his things.
"What do you mean?"
"That virus that's going around is here. Apparently people are getting sick and turning into cannibals or something. There was just a broadcast saying to get somewhere safe."
Shane was confused but quickly sprung into action and grabbed his keys and gun completely forgetting about the prisoner.
He rushed home and packed everything he thought he'd need like weapons, clothes, and food. Once he was satisfied he got in his car and made his way to the Grimes' house.
Shane pounded on the front door scaring Lori who was inside making dinner. She quickly went to the door and was surprised to see Shane standing there.
"What are you doing here?" She questioned.
"Go pack some clothes and food. We need to get out of here."
"What? Why? Shane what's going on?"
"Haven't you watched the news? People are getting sick and eating other people. We need to get somewhere safe. Where's Carl and Cali?"
"Carl's up in his room and Cali's at Jade's." Lori replied looking worried. Shane felt his heart drop. She was out there alone. She probably had no idea what was going on.
"Shit! Okay you and Carl pack a bag for you two and pack one for Cali too. I'm going to go get her and then when we get back we'll go."
"Shane!" Lori called after him as he made his way out the door. "What about Rick?"
Shane sighed. "We'll go and get him after I get Cali." With that Shane was back in his car rushing to get the love of his life. He was praying that she hadn't got the virus.
When he pulled up to Jade's house he pulled out his gun and had it ready just in case. There were people running around the streets trying to get out of the city. It looked like everyone had lost their minds. It was complete madness.
Upon entering the house Shane heard what seemed to be crying. As he followed the sound to the kitchen he got there in time to see a woman standing up. She looked like the prisoner. Her eyes were clouded over and she was very pale. He also noticed that her stomach was ripped open displaying her insides.
He looked around the room and noticed his girl leaning over a body crying. She hadn't yet noticed the dead woman behind her.
"Cali!" Shane screamed as he watched the woman stumble towards her. He quickly aimed and fired his gun shooting the woman in the chest. She of course didn't stop coming. Shane shot her a second time hitting her in the stomach but it again didn't work.
"The brain! It has to be the brain." Cali cried as she watched him aim his gun this time at the woman's head.
One last shot and the woman was down. Shane looked over at Cali inspecting her. She had tears streaming down her face and blood on her clothing.
Shane slowly crouched down next to her and stroked her cheek wiping away her tears. "You alright?" He asked in a gentle voice.
Cali simply shook her head before wrapping her arms around him and crying into his chest. Shane sighed and held her tightly rubbing her back.
"We have to go Cal. We gotta get to your house and get your mom and brother."
The young brunette allowed him to help her stand. Shane held Cali's hand as he led them outside and to his car. There were a few of the dead now in the street. One was bent over eating a woman while two others were simply trudging down the street towards them.
