Somehow Rick had done it.
He convinced Dr. Jenner to open the doors and let the group out. Cali didn't waste a second as she headed for her and Shane's room to grab her bags. Everyone was in the main lobby trying to open the doors to the outside but as Jenner stated they were completely locked down. The teen had no idea how they were going to get them open.
"Get them doors open!" Shane yelled as he watched Glenn and T-Dog pull on the handles.
"It doesn't work!" Glenn exclaimed looking around widely wondering what they could do to get them open.
"Wait a minute! Wait a minute!" T-Dog said grabbing a chair and handing it to Shane who was now inspecting the doors. "Try it! Try it!"
Everyone watched as he raised it and began to bash the glass window, unfortunately for the group[ the glass wouldn't budge. The chair didn't even leave a scratch on the pristine glass.
"Stay close, sweetheart." Rick whispered pulling Cali behind him where Lori was holding onto Carl.
"Time's almost up." Daryl grunted trying the axe on the window. It or course didn't do anything.
"Daryl, look out!" Shane instructed getting his gun out once more. "Dog, get down! Get down!" He shot the glass a couple of times hoping it would do something but it was useless. "Jesus." He breathed heavily not knowing what else they could do.
"What are we supposed to do? The glass won't break!" Cali wondered looking at her dad.
"Rick, I have something that might help." Carol suddenly spoke up from the other side of Lori.
Everyone watched as she shifted through her bag looking for something.
"Carol, I don't think a nail file's gonna do it."
"Your first morning at camp, when I washed your uniform I found this in your pocket." She said ignoring Shane, and showcasing a grenade.
Cali's eyes widened as she watched her dad take it from the woman's hands. She immediately grabbed her brother and pulled him away from the glass windows. "Come on."
"Look out!" Shane yelled gesturing for everyone to move away. He immediately went over to Cali who was hovering over Carl. "Get down! Get down!" He exclaimed covering her body with his own.
The blast from the grenade left everyone disoriented for a few moments. Cali was unable to hear or focus on anything around her before she felt Shane's grip on her arm, pulling her up from the ground. The Grimes girl picked her brother up and let Shane lead them out of the building.
The group all headed towards their vehicles, Cali getting in the car with her parents and Carol, as Shane headed to the Rv. He wasn't too happy about her being separated from him but didn't have long to think about it as he spotted a blonde exiting the building.
"Wait wait wait." Rick yelled noticing the same thing. "They're coming."
All everyone could do was watch as Dale and Andrea tried to make it as far away from the C.D.C. as they could before it blew up.
"Come on!" Everyone shouted wanting them to hurry up. It was only a matter of time before the timer finally ran out.
Glenn began to honk the horn of the Rv noticing the ground begging to shake. "Dale, get down!"
"Everybody down!" Rick exclaimed pushing Lori's body down beside him as the group all crouched down in their respective vehicles.
The explosion of the C.D.C. was ten times worse than the grenade blowing open the doors. The whole building was engulfed in hot flames that the group could feel the heat from a distance away. The ground shook and the bang was deafening.
No one could believe that they were on the other side of the explosion. They were all extremely grateful that they'd managed to get out, a few minutes later and they would have all been dead.
"Come on. Come on." Rick was the first was one to regain his senses and immediately began to yell at Dale and Andrea to get in the Rv.
They were crouched behind some cement barriers that the government put up at the beginning of the apocalypse. He could see a heard of walkers coming toward them, probably attracted by the loud noise of the explosion. He knew they needed to get out of there soon.
"Get in, get in, get in." Glenn repeated as he held the Rv door open for the two. As soon as they were safely in the Rv, Shane was speeding off with Rick and Daryl following after him. He wasn't the best at driving the large vehicle but that didn't matter, all he cared about was getting out of there as soon as possible.
The one thought on Cali's mind as she stared at the destroyed building was what now?
The C.D.C. was supposed to be safe. They were supposed to be able to wait out this virus and maybe find a cure, but now it was gone and their dreams of a cure crushed.
What were they supposed to do?
Where were they supposed to go?
Was anywhere actually safe?
