Otis was the hunter of the family. He was the only one allowed out in the woods on his own, and today was one of those days. He was covering some land that belonged to one of their late neighbors. He hadn't had any luck the last couple of days finding any game so he decided to check a different area.
The hunter came across the little farmhouse that once belonged to an elderly couple who were close friends of Hershel Greene's. He had already checked the house and taken the couple to the farm when he found them turned but he figured it wouldn't hurt to check the home again, maybe he had missed some supplies the first time around.
He was expecting to find empty shelves and dust everywhere not a teenage girl sitting against the kitchen wall.
Cali weakly raised her head to look at where the sound of footsteps were coming from. She figured it was probably a walker but was shocked to see a man standing before her with a raised shot gun.
"Please!" She coughed out. The man thought she was asking him to lower his weapon but was surprised by her next words. "Please kill me!" Cali begged.
"I ain't gonna hurt yah." Otis shook his head crouching down to the girls level.
"Kill me!" Cali cried pulling her shirt away from her shoulder to reveal her bite. "Don't let me turn into one of them!"
The sound of her and Otis' voices alerted Sophia who once again began to bang on the closet door. Otis looked at Cali nervously and stood back up putting a hand on his gun, ready to defend himself if she tried to set whatever was in the closet on him.
"Who's in there?" He asked using the end of his gun to point at the door.
"Sophia." The girl replied in a whisper.
"Why?"
"She bit me." Cali rested her head back against the wood door feeling lightheaded. "She's just a little girl. She didn't deserve this." She began to mumble to herself.
"Why don't you let me help you." Otis stated putting his shot gun down once he knew for sure that the girl wasn't dangerous.
"You can help me by killing me."
"I ain't gonna kill yah." He sighed. "I know someone who can help."
Cali shook her head. There was no way to help her let alone anyone. The living were doomed to die and turn into monsters. "There's no cure. There's no hope for anyone." She informed him as she felt herself being picked up by the man.
"You're going to be alright." Was the last thing Cali heard as Otis carried her out of the house and into the early morning light. The Grimes girl watched the sun shining through the green of the trees and a bird flying above. She was at peace in that moment.
Otis made it back to the farm before Cali turned. Hershel wasn't happy when he saw the man carrying an unconscious girl but he explained to Hershel how the girl wanted to die, that she didn't have hope for the future. He felt bad for her, she was so young and she'd already lost all faith in the world.
Otis wanted her to be saved when they found a cure. He wanted her to join the Greene family on the farm when she came back. They would help set the young girl straight.
So Hershel let Otis put Cali in the barn with the rest of their family and friends.
And Otis didn't forget about the girl Cali had mentioned. The next day he went right back to the farmhouse and found Sophia in the closet. He thought that the little girl might have been Cali's sister so he brought her back to the farm as well.
He felt bad for the two girls. They were both young and on their own. At least when the sickness was cured they'd be able to be together again, He knew they'd fit right in on the farm with Beth.
All they had to do was wait. God was going to save them all.
