Sirius was finding it terribly difficult to contribute to the conversation, resigned to looking at the unfamiliar surroundings blankly and listening to the tapping of the rain against the window. The woman beside him took a deep breath in order to prepare herself for conversation with him.
"I know its not much, compared to what you have at home, but it's something," she sighed, resting a hand on his shoulder. Sirius nodded, knowing deep down that he wouldn't enjoy sharing a room with three other boys that were probably more immature than his female cousins.
"The boys are nice, I think that you'll fit in just fine, unpack and get some rest, I'll see you tomorrow morning in regards to your schedule."
The red is in an ugly touch.
She squeezed his shoulder suddenly and frowned waiting for his response.
The school grounds look ravishing from up here.
"Goodnight," she uttered before leaving him alone in this new dorm room. Upon her departure, Sirius wandered around the room hesitantly and looked at the posters that his new roommates had strung up on the walls; Gryffindor banners, sticky-notes with odd handwriting, a random sock pinned to the wall with a thumbtack.
It was different being in a room that looked so lived in. There were traces of life all around the room, a messy bed, a few half-opened drawers, magazines stripped of their covers, posters of the Chudley Cannons that were worn at the corners.
The door swung open suddenly, capturing Sirius' attention. A boy, that seemed to be at least an inch taller than him, peeked his head through the doorway, gawking at Sirius.
"Remus isn't here is he?" the stranger cleared his throat, stepping into the room. Sirius shook his head slowly.
"Oh- Well I'm James Potter, are you our roommate?" To this, Sirius nodded. James' glasses were falling down his nose carelessly, as he reached out his hand.
"Sirius Black," Sirius grinned, glad to talk to someone that didn't know what had happened. James chuckled at his demeanor and shook his hand gratefully.
"Not too sure where the other two are but they should be heading up soon," James babbled, "Are you from Durmstrang? No offence to you, but they're a rather... odd bunch are they?"
"Oh I know, that school is ridiculous," Sirius took a look at his watch, and after noticing that it was past 9pm, he wondered why the other two weren't back yet.
"Excuse me, James?"
"Yes," James turned around quickly, looking a little startled by the sudden use of his name.
"What bed is mine?"
"That one," James nodded to the one closest to the door and on the opposite side of the bathroom, returning to his luggage.
James hummed to the tune of a song thoughtlessly as he folded his clothes into his trunk. Sirius began to unpack his clothes into the trunk that sat at the end of the bed James had nodded to. He was still unaware of how large the school was, thinking of all the places that he could explore once he finished unpacking.
"Wanna help me find Peter and Remus? They should've been back by now," James turned to him after a few minutes. Sirius took a moment to think of what James had just asked him because he was still a little tired from his late night the night before.
"Sure," Sirius shrugged, receiving a glad smile from James. The two of them headed out of the dormitory and James showed Sirius around the common room for a brief moment, introducing him to Lily Evans and Marlene McKinnon.
James led him down corridors, keeping the conversation going effortlessly. Sirius enjoyed talking to James, he wasn't as uptight as the people his parents always tried to surround him with.
Eventually, they came upon a small boy with fidgety hands, standing outside of a classroom. He shook his head violently upon seeing James, urging him to run off.
"James, he is going to murder you," the small boy squealed. James peeked into the window attached to the door.
"He looks fine," James shrugged, "anyways, this is our new roommate, peter, meet Sirius-"
James was cut short by the classroom door opening and a girl leaving with tears in her eyes. James and Peter exchanged a glance before a tall, blonde headed boy stormed out of the classroom, hitting James' shoulder a he passed by.
"Prat," the blonde muttered as he headed down the hall.
"That's Remus, he's a sweetheart," James watched as Remus turned a corner swiftly. The three of them headed back to the dorm with caution, neither of them explaining why Remus had been so angry.

That night, Sirius closed the curtains around the bed he would be sleeping in, as he was already exhausted from his long day, and he settled on exploring his new school some more in the morning. Sirius fumbled around his bed in search for the book that he had left sitting out earlier and began to flip through the pages until he found his bookmark.
There was minimal light within the enclosed space of his curtains, urging him to utilize the light from his wand. He flinched when he heard a thud from James' side of the room and then footsteps heading across.
Remus and James began to whisper angrily at each other, Peter seemingly unaffected by the loud whispering, continuing his snoring. Sirius removed the light from his wand with a wave of his hand and quickly began to fake a noiseless slumber.
The whispers disappeared after a while, the boys eventually settling down for bed.
Sirius found it merely impossible to sleep that night, staring straight up at the ceiling and listening to the quiet breathing as the other boys slept. He laid there thoughtless, catching at least an hour of a light sleep.
