"Checkmate! Hah. Eat shit Pettigrew," Sirius beamed, moving his bishop across the board. Peter stared at the board blankly before looking back up at Sirius with a puzzled look.
"That's not checkmate," Peter looked back down at the board trying to see what he was missing.
"Yes it is," Sirius furrowed his brow, waving his hands around the board enthusiastically. Remus lifted his eyes for less than a second from the sheet of parchment he was reading.
"That's not checkmate," Remus muttered, looking back down. Sirius made a disgruntled sound and leapt up from Remus' bed.
"Where's James?" Sirius asked after checking under his bed. Remus shrugged, his glasses slipping down his nose ever so slightly.
"Pestering lily I suppose," Peter suggested, sliding off the end of Remus' bed and heading to his own designated space.
Sirius muttered something before pulling off his shirt and rummaging through his drawers for a packet of cigarettes.
Remus got up abruptly and made a start for the door, taking off his reading glasses in the process and stuffing them in his pocket. The door opened and shut, peter and Sirius exchanged a look.
"Whats his problem?" Sirius asked Peter, he wasn't expecting an answer but he asked anyways.
Peter shrugged, too unbothered to care about his odd behavior. Although he seemed oblivious, Sirius was well aware of why Remus was acting like this.
Remus was the type of person to run away from his problems, and at this moment, Sirius just happened to be one of his problems. After what had happened the night before, Remus was visibly tense.
Sirius was fully aware of this, and he felt a twinge of guilt when he thought about it too hard, yet he acted oblivious for peters sake.
The next time that Sirius saw him was at dinner. The tension between them was drawing a wall between the conversation happening at the table.
"Do you guys have plans for winter break?" Lily inquired, her eyes directed towards the brunette placed beside Sirius.
James cleared his throat, replying with an answer that neither Remus or Sirius were paying attention to. Their eyes would meet for a moment just before the two of them would redirect their gaze guiltily.
On his left, Sirius felt a delicate hand place itself onto his thigh. It was Mary. He felt bad that during his tangled love life, Sirius had completely forgotten about the girl he was basically in a relationship with, although they hadn't made it official.
Sirius smiled and placed a kiss on her cheek. Just in that moment, Remus pushed his almost full plate away from him and stood up from his seat.
"I need to catch up on some studying," he smiled lightly, before leaving the great hall in a swift motion. A look was exchanged across the table; one of confusion and concern.
A couple hours after dinner, Sirius made a trip down to the library in search of his mysterious friend, and also to drop off a stack of books that he had let pile up over the last few weeks.
A large white poster with thick red letters was strung above the library entrance reading, "PLEASE RETURN LIBRARY BOOKS BEFORE HOLIDAYS" a tiny "thank you" was written beneath it.
Sirius was did exactly that, dropping off four large books into the return box. Then, to further his exploration, he headed through a couple of dimly lit isles, looking for his lanky roommate.
The majority of the books on the shelves looked as though they hadn't been touched since the school first opened. Sirius followed this strange trail of tattered books until he reached a very dark isle with glass cases guarding the books.
Sirius looked both ways before he crept inside this forbidden section. His fingers hovered over the glass that encased rows on rows of books.
"You can't be back here," a familiar voice chirped, Sirius jumped at the sudden noise. He turned around to face the blonde headed Marlene.
"What is this place?" Sirius furrowed his brow, looking at the books once more before being led out by Marlenes nimble fingers.
"The restricted section, you can only get something from here if you get written permission from a professor," She spoke like she had grown bored of reciting the same line over and over again.
"Oh," Sirius muttered, rubbing his eyes. He had now realized how late he had managed to stay out, his eyelids growing heavy.
"Oh, and Sirius?" Marlene spoke quickly before ending their conversation, "can you check up on Remus for me? I think he'll talk to you, I dunno.. I just feel like he's been different lately."
"I don't think he'll want to talk to me," Sirius scratched the back of his wrist. Marlenes expression shifted.
"Why? Did you do something to him?" She asked rapidly.
"No, no, nothing like that," Sirius waved his hands defensively, "I just.. I think he would rather talk to James or Peter."
"I've seen the way he is around you, and James is to busy talking to lily all the time," Marlene rolled her eyes, Sirius' focus still on the first line of her sentence.
"Alright. I'll talk to him, but I can't guarantee that he will tell me anything," He agreed, earning a smile on Marlenes fair skin.
So that night when everyone was asleep, Sirius crept across the creaky floorboards and called Remus' name through his closed curtains.
"What," he muttered, pulling back one side of the curtains. Sirius took this as an invitation to climb in, taking a seat beside Remus on the bed.
"Are you okay?" Sirius whispered, unable to make out Remus' face in the dark lighting. Remus shushed him, putting a finger to his lips.
He then took his wand out from under his pillow and muttered a silencing spell. The spell made it so only the people in within 6 feet could hear the words spoken with the bubble.
"What do you want?" Remus turned to Sirius, the two of them sitting up on the bed rigidly. Sirius pushed a hand through his hair.
"I wanted to apologize..." Sirius hummed.
"For what?"
"For what happened in the broom closet," Sirius ended.
"Nothing happened," Remus' voice went a little higher as if he were being accused of something blasphemous.
"But-"
"I'm trying to sleep," Remus flopped back down onto his bed and turned his back to Sirius.
"Remus," Sirius tried to cut through.
"Get out."
Sirius obeyed, heading back to his own bed for the night.
