The day of,
"Which color, this or this?" Marlene questioned the three boys seated on the dormitory floor. She held up two plain dresses with white trim, one a dark green and the other a pale pink. The colors didn't matter much though, what mattered most was the impression that Marlene made on Dorcas' family.
The giddy girl packed her bag with delight, preparing for the dinner scheduled for during Christmas break. Though, not everyone was as excited for the break as she was, Peter was to go on vacation with his bothersome cousins, Sirius now had to make a surprise visit at his Uncles funeral, and Remus was going to be annoyed by James treating him like the sibling he never had.
"I like the green one more," Remus suggested, nibbling the side of his thumb thoughtfully. He seemed to be the only one voicing his opinions because James had no sense of fashion and Sirius had been quieter than usual after hearing the terrible news.
"The pink is cuter," Mary cut in, as she absentmindedly folded her clothes and placed them in her suitcase. This left the blonde girl unsure of what to pick. A clever red head entered the dormitory with a quick pace and empty hands.
"Just pack them both Marls," she rushed over to her desk and snagged a couple books off the top. Marlene nodded and put both of the dresses into her luggage for her mom to decide later. The red head began her way towards the door again with a quick pace.
"James, can you take these to the library for me?" Lily stopped in her tracks and furrowed her anxious brows.
"Sure," he got up from the floor and accepted the books into his hands without question. She smiled and placed a chaste kiss on his lips.
"Thanks babe," the usually formal red head muttered naturally before returning to her bags as if nothing had happened. This casual name calling even got Sirius to rise his head in curiosity.
James left the room and Mary quickly opened her mouth, "Babe?" she grinned.
"What?" Lily ignored her friends giggles and stuffed a few shirts loosely into her bag. Her pale skin made it easy to spot the rising blush on her cheeks.
"You two are so cute! Are you gonna meet his parents soon?" Marlene exclaimed, wishing that someone else would go through this situation with her. The red head gave a shy smile and nodded.
"He invited me to dinner last night," Lily smiled as she reminisced on the night before. Everyone was jealous of how in love the young couple was, the two of them would surely stay together for a long while.
Remus glanced over at Sirius and realized that they would soon be having dinner together. Maybe it wasn't with their own parents, but the Potters sure treated them like family. What did this mean for them during the break?
This odd thought remained in Remus' head as they packed their own bags shortly after, and it plagued him as they entered the bus. The longer he looked at Sirius, the weirder he felt. They were going to be sleeping in the same house, eating at the same table, walking on the same wooden floors, and of course this wasn't any different than what they were doing now, but something about it felt forbidden.
The bus rattled as students swarmed through the isles, and the usual group of seventh year Gryffindors squeezed into the same carriage. Remus, Sirius, Peter and James were then followed by, Lily, Mary and Marlene, and finally, Dorcas took her rightful seat next to Marlene.
Sirius watched the scenery outside the window rather than participating in the conversation occurring in their carriage. He hadn't been home for more than a year, and he wasn't sure what to expect. The ride felt dull and the people speaking around him sounded distances away.
Eventually everyone fell asleep, then they were at the platform again. Remus was still dead asleep by the time they arrived and James was only just waking up. The isle outside of their compartment was incredibly busy with students of all ages rushing to leave.
"Remus, wake up," James yawned, kicking his foot. With a grunt, Remus opened his bleary eyes and prepared himself for the Christmas to come. Out the window, Sirius could clearly see his parents standing beside each other but still so far apart, the two of them wearing matching scowls.
He quickly grabbed his luggage and slipped through the compartment doors after his roommates who had just found an opening. It smelt of train smoke and morning dew, and it felt like the beginning of the end.
Before approaching his parents, Sirius stopped to say goodbye to James and Remus. They looked at him with a hidden sadness because everyone was aware of the bothersome family Sirius had.
"I'll see you guys in a few days," Sirius reassured them, planning on heading to James' right after the funeral. His two best friends nodded and to this he stepped away from them and began his way to his parents. James squeezed him into a bear hug before he could even get more than a couple feet away.
"Write to us, I'm serious," he pulled away from the bone crushing hug. A smile tugged on Sirius' lips.
"No, I'm Sirius," he avoided the pleads. Sadly, he couldn't promise any letters because it was terribly difficult to send one out undetected at Grimmauld place. To his left, Remus watched him with that same saddened look on his face, he could probably see through the act.
Sirius opened his arms for Remus to step into, his heart picking up a beat even at the thought of his parents seeing them embrace each other. With a hint of hesitation, Remus wrapped his arms around him and tucked his head into Sirius' shoulder.
"I'll miss you," Sirius whispered into his ear before pulling away nervously. A soft smile on Remus' lips showed that he felt the same.
"I'll write to you," James nodded to him, watching as he took couple steps towards his family.
"You better," Sirius shot back.
