Sirius agreed to the Hogsmeade escapade he was "promised". The two of them left the school grounds in a hurry, trying with their best efforts to avoid being spotted by a spectator of the ongoing quidditch match.
The sky was clouding up and Sirius couldn't help but think that this was a bad idea. His shoes were getting muddied up as he let Remus lead him down a trail covered in moss and vines.
"Why did you come to Hogwarts?" Remus glanced at Sirius, and then back at the path Infront of them. This seemed like an attempt to cut through the thick layer of silence that had grown over them.
Sirius remained silent for a moment. He wasn't ready to talk about it, so instead he settled on a white lie.
"Um- I lived with my grandfather before, i just moved in with my parents again, durmstrang was too.. much," Sirius shrugged stiffly. Remus nodded in understanding, stepping onto the cobbled road of hogsmeade.
"Why was that girl crying the night I met you?" Sirius inquired, he was glad to flip the conversation onto Remus. Remus didn't seem very happy with the topic of discussion, his expression faltering.
"Well, you know James, how persistent he is," Remus spoke, "he is trying to set me up with someone, but I'm just not looking for a relationship.. so Cathy was told that i liked her, i just told her no and she kinda lashed out."
Sirius didn't bother asking why James was doing this, he was all too focused on the fact that Remus had turned down such a beautiful girl. Rather than continuing their conversation, Sirius followed the boy infront of him into a stationary store.
Remus branched off immediately upon entering the store, Sirius following him around like a lost puppy. He observed silently as Remus picked up bottles of ink with careful hands. The store smelt a lot like the library at home, the smell of parchment and dust warming Sirius' heart.
"What are you looking for?" Sirius whispered. The store was empty save for the cashier behind the counter.
"Stuff," Remus muttered after a deep breath.
"what kind of stuff?"
"ink."
"why?"
"because i can," Remus snapped, heading to the cashier.
"I thought that we were just gonna sneak away from the castle for a few hours and do something fun," Sirius frowned. The cashier eyed the two of them cautiously as he rung out Remus' items.
Remus scoffed, picking up his purchases and leaving the store without Sirius. Of course Sirius followed him, slowing his pace once he noticed that Remus hadn't gone too far, standing on the steps of the store that they had just left.
It was down pouring.
"What now?" Sirius asked, hoping that Remus had an idea.
"We could walk back... but I haven't gotten everything I need... I cant come back tomo-" Remus was cut off by a loud clap of thunder.
"I think we should stay at the pub across the street, they have rooms, and I can buy the rest of my stuff tomorrow morning," Remus looked anxious, glancing at Sirius nervously.
"What about bed-check," Sirius furrowed his brow.
"I can send James a letter, he can think of something," Remus replied quickly, listening as another rumble rippled through the sky.
"Okay, let's stay here," Sirius nodded. Remus headed across the street quickly after hearing his approval.
They entered the pub with water stained clothes, the few people that were in there started as they took a seat at the counter.
A plump lady from the other side of the counter, neared them. "What are you boys doing here," she chuckled.
"Can we have a room?" Remus was still jittery for no reason. She eyed the two of them knowingly, turning toward the wall of room keys before plucking one off the wall.
"It's free, just because you two are students okay?" She said sternly, handing Remus the key, "don't go telling your friends about this,"the two of them nodded thankfully.
She smiled before heading back to the dishes stacked on the counter. Remus got up from his seat and headed up the stairwell at the back of the pub.
Is he mad at me? Sirius thought to himself.
He followed Remus up the stairwell shortly after him. At the top of the stairwell he was met with a hall of doors with numbers of the room embedded into them. Remus was unlocking the door of a room to his left.
Sirius stood closely beside him as he fumbled with the door key. A man at the other end of the hallway began mumbling to himself as he pulled at his hair. Remus glanced over his shoulder to the man approaching them.
"get in," Remus hastily pushed Sirius into their room once opening it, shutting the door quickly behind the two of them. Neither of them spoke about their close encounter with the stranger, there was just a mutual understanding that it had scared the shit out of the two of them.
The room they were in had two beds and a door leading to the bathroom, it wasn't much but Sirius was happy with the change of scenery.
He was exhausted after their long day, unbuttoning his wet shirt and tossing it carelessly on the floor. Next he took off his wet pants, and shoes, leaving him in just his boxers for bed.
Sirius laid down bed and listened to the rain hitting the window. Remus on the other hand folded his wet clothes and left them sitting on the dresser that came with the room.
He curled up under the covers of his bed and began to write a letter to James, using a napkin and the jar of ink that he had just purchased.
"How do you plan on sending it out?" Sirius inquired, sitting up in the stiff hotel bed.
"I'll figure it out," Remus folded the letter carefully, reaching for his wand that sat on the nightstand.
Sirius watched as he mumbled an enchantment, Turning the once thin piece of parchment paper into an origami bird.
The paper bird had a mind of its own, much like a real one, it flew around the room a couple times before heading out the open window.
Once the bird was gone, Remus shut the window, shutting off the lamp beside his bed before laying down with his back facing Sirius.
"Shut off your lamp," Remus grumbled.
"Stop being so moody."
"I'm just tired."
