another stupid secret

Sunday,

November 4th

It truly was a pity watching Sirius make his way down the stairs to the common room that was only a couple steps down. Still, he refused help from anyone because he believed himself capable. His knee had gotten a bit better since the day he had injured it, Mme. Pompfrey wished to do a follow up soon to see if she could remove the brace.

The sun had already set and the fireplace was lit in the common room, it had also begun to snow outside, making for a cozy atmosphere. If only they had some hot chocolate, then it would really feel like they were nearing Christmas.

"Does anyone want to play chess?" Peter inquired peacefully from where he was sitting before the fireplace. Not one of the three boys he had asked agreed to play chess with him. They had come to the conclusion that they were too old for such boring games, they would much rather waste their time talking about other people.

About an hour passed of them doing their own things while seated beside each other. Nothing about this changed until a little birdie flew by and plopped itself onto Remus' lap. The little bird was crafted out of paper, something that was native to Remus but he had taught some others how to make them.

Everyone's attention averted to Remus and the note sitting on his lap. He quickly snatched it up and wasted no time at unveiling the message.

"Whos it from?" Sirius furrowed his brow, leaning closer to sneak a look at the message. His eyes were still scanning the note but he knew better than to let Sirius peek at it.

The note was from Katherine, and written in a twirly cursive, she asked him to meet her in the abandoned corridor on the fifth floor. Though the directions weren't thorough, he knew what she was talking about simply because he had an incredible sense of direction when it came to Hogwarts.

"Um.." Remus thought quickly, jumping up from his seat, "I forgot, I have detention"

"They wouldn't send you a note," James countered his lie, looking up at him curiously. They were too late to get to Remus before he was already out of the Gryffidor tower and on his way to the fifth floor.

He could hear her muffled sobs before he even turned down the abandoned hall that he had reached. At the other end of the corridor that Remus stood in, was a yellow blob, a sight that Remus had seen once before and had hoped to never see again.

Katherine was wrapped up in her yellow Hufflepuff blanket, holding her illuminated wand and began to approach him upon hearing his footsteps. Naturally, he wrapped her in a tight embrace in hopes to soothe her tears.

"Whats going on?" he whispered into her hair. The portraits above them were annoyed by the light that emitted from her wand, but they grew curious by their interaction. Moving paintings loved drama.

"I don't want to talk about it," she sniffled, "I just wanted to see you."

He cringed at her words, but she didn't see it. It was true that she had grown closer to Remus in secret, but she still had yet to tell him about her boyfriend, and he wanted to hear it from her. In the rush of things, Remus didn't even think about the caretaker that wandered the halls with his cat at night.

The moment Remus heard the shuffle of his footsteps down the hall, he knew that it was none other than Filch. He seized Katherine by the arm and pulled her into the nearest room, which happened to be an abandoned classroom that had been originally abandoned because the course had been removed from selection.

"What was that?" she glanced her teary eyes out the window on the door, only to be pulled away by Remus. His hand lingered on her wrist for a moment longer than she thought friendly.

"Filch was coming, you didn't hear him?" Remus questioned himself for a moment. She shook her head. Then he remembered that the full moon was to happen that week, which explained why he had been so anxious when reading her letter and why he had been able to hear Filch from a mile away.

He couldn't tell her that though, so he kept silent. The two of them stood idle in the classroom before Remus decided that it was time for him to go back to his dorm.

"I think he's gone," Remus continued to whisper, only because it felt right. He then reached for the doorknob, only for his arm to be grabbed by the girl beside him. Her blue eyes seemed unusually bright, taking his focus, and it was too late before Remus realized what was happening.

She leaned in and placed a lingering kiss on Remus' lips, her eyes shut tightly as a contrast to Remus' shocked looking ones. Remus didn't stop her, but he surely didn't kiss her back, the fact that she had a boyfriend almost disgusted him.

Katherine pulled away nervously after a moment had passed, scanning his face for a hint of any emotion. He smiled politely and reaches for the door again.

"We should go," she let out airily, he nodded in agreement and exited the room cautiously. They parted ways at the door with so little as a smile shared between them.

Once she was fully out of sight, his expression dropped completely. If Barty Crouch Jr. had something against him before, he couldn't even imagine what would happen now that Katherine had kissed him. He also couldn't tell his roommates because there was no way that they would understand why he would see her in the first place, and it would only cause problems.

Still, when he returned to the common room to see James and Peter on the couches, they had questions. James usually kept his nose out of things but when it came to Remus, he couldn't help but be curious.

"How was detention," he gave Remus a sly look, to which he ignored and walked away. He felt sick after having Katherine touch him, and he just wanted to sleep the night away.

Remus headed upstairs and avoided making eye contact with his roommates on the couches. This interaction didn't prepare him for what was to come in the dorm room.

"Where were you?" Sirius asked him as soon as the door shut behind him. He was propped up on his bed as if he had been waiting for Remus' return much like an evil villain. Though in this case, Remus was the evil one.

"Detention," he lied terribly, sitting on the edge of his bed to untie his shoelaces and take them off. Silence ensued, this was Sirius' way of letting him know that he was upset, it was also probably something that Sirius' parents had used on him as well.

"I hate your stupid secrets," Sirius let out, sounding much like a child but getting his point across nonetheless, "if we are gonna be friends you need to fess up and tell me why you've been so sneaky."

Remus was itching to tell him everything that had happened, but he just couldn't. Instead he laid down in bed and ignored Sirius altogether. This gave Sirius his answer, and he let out a huff of anger before rolling over in his own bed.

The secrets would tear them apart, but the answers would be so worth it. Remus just needed to know what had happened the day that Sirius had been injured, and why he had been targeted.
