Vivienne didn't even know why she felt this pang on her chest as she was holding Daphne, she kept looking over at Zephyr.
Lynn and Zeph casually strolled along, following by a yelp, and then two.
"ouch"
"I'm so sorry"
Lynn wasn't experienced at the steps and rhythm and couldn't help but accidentally step on Zeph's shoes.
Daphne and Vivi waltzed and joked around, moving along the clap beat Nina was instructing "And 3 2 1 and 3 2 1 and switch!" she yelled
Daphne smirked, as he placed his hands on Lynn's shoulder who looked like she wanted to punch him.
But something clicked, maybe it was just that the piece Wylan was playing was easy to dance at or maybe Lynn wasn't so bad at dancing now. But dancing felt easy with Daphne who was now looking at her monotonously and yet intensely. He looked at her with not the smug look he always had but with calmness and as though he was trying to figure her out. She felt a shiver go down her spine and It was definitely not because it was cold.
Daphne meanwhile, felt an uncomfortable sense of safety. He shook it off.
Vivi in took a sharp breath, when Zeph placed his slender hands on her. She could even feel the rings on them through the cloth of her gown. Zeph greeted her with a small loopy smile which Vivi found very adorable. She smiled back and they both seemed to be terrible dancers but they both had a good idea with the rhythm.
This time Wylan played a different piece.
Daphne grinned "Funny considering this piece is called Six Partitas. Six crows"
Lynn scowled "You sure know how to flaunt your impeccable sense of knowledge don't you?"
Daphne suddenly fell quiet, creating an awkward tension.
Lynn raised her eyebrow "Say something."
He simply shrugged.
"So," Zephyr murmured softly to Vivi.
"So" repeated Vivi. "So, tell me more about you" Zeph grinned.
Just then, Nina yelled "Switch!" again. The girls hovered in an instant.
"Well, we're back to normal" Lynn grinned at Zephyr.
"Please don't step on my toes"
Vivi and Daphne continued freely dancing, however despite that neither of them were looking at each other.
"No, no, no." Nina murmured, and looked at Matthias who was grimacing and watching Lynn and Zephyr who were back to messing up their steps and stepping on each other's shoes.
"Wylan could you stop the music." Nina said to Wylan who was beside her and stopped.
"Finally." Lynn sighed and looked at Zephyr who swiftly grabbed a chair and sat on it, "We suck at dancing."
"Yes, we are terrible at it." Zeph said as they opened their tie roughly.
"Thankyou for not stepping on my shoes." Daphne told Vivi who patted him on the back, grinning.
"We need to switch partners." Nina informed them and Lynn cursed under breath as she and Daphne looked at each other. He winked.
Could that git stop winking really tempting me to go kaz mode and rip his eye balls out, she thought to herself.
So Wylan played a smooth melty jazz piece, and Vivi and Zeph stepped on the wide floor
Vivi looked anywhere but at Zephyr, who looked at the dark haired girl for a while then diverted his gaze.
Vivi wanted to say something. Time was slipping by and she really wanted to just blurt something out.
"Well," she blushed when Zeph looked at her "I like to read"
He smiled at this. "Me too"
Vivi looked up at them then, and for a moment, it felt like those two were the only people in the world. The silence was deafening. She could hear her own heart beating.
"And uhm- I play the violin and yea" she really wanted to punch herself.
Zephyr chuckled "You needn't feel uncomfortable with me" Their hands dug a little deeper into her waist, out of awkwardness.
Lynn was trying her hardest to intimidate Daphne who wouldn't flinch an inch.
"Well there will be about three switches in the final ball, we still need to practice. Switch!" The room felt like it was spinning.
Lynn kept a good two feet away from Zephyr, too guilty for the toes. She looked at Vivi and Daphne who seemed to be having the time of their lives.
She should just stay away from him, she thought to herself. Daphne was no good for her. It would only make things harder when she would have to go back.
"Grateful to not be stepped on" smiled Zephyr.
"Grateful to not have stepped"
Nina yelled again "And back! This time focus on your moves instead of this" she gestured at her mouth "I will be monitoring you"
She came to Vivi and Zephyr "Now look at each other, you're acting like little children" she tilted Zeph's head downwards, they could see Vivienne up close. Vivi gulped. She could lean just a bit and their lips would be touching.
Zeph smelled of somewhere between fresh rain and black tea,
"Okay, enough practice for now"
Zephyr quickly backed off and marched away abruptly
Nina looked at Vivi "Did you step on their toes ?"
They trained that way for several days, now Lynn and Daphne could dance without trying to fracture eachother's toes, and Zephyr could actually hold eye contact with Vivienne for more than 2 seconds.
Nina being the optimist she is always cheered for them, and though the girls appeared dreaded by her, she was like a best friend to them. They could lean on her when things got tough. She was the small speckle of light, brightening the darkest of rooms.
