Kaz had gone all stiff and silent during the rest of the ride. Inej threw him a questioning glance and he nodded hesitantly.
Jesper frowned, then became wide eyed as she whispered something to him. Lynn had fallen asleep beside Inej at some point and they let her as she needed rest.
Zephyr could sense something was wrong and so could Vivi by the look on the three crowd's faces.
A low murmur was heard when they came to the familiar lane of ketterdam. Kaz was getting impatient and so were the others. The murmur got louder as they heard a faint crackling sound. And then a strong bitter smell.
"B-boss." The carriage man stuttered as they came to a halt. Kaz knew what he predicted was right, when he swung the carriage door open and witnessed the sight of the crow club in front of him.
Before them stood the infamous Crow Club, blazing and crackling, surrounded with flames all around.
The bottles of whiskey and rum caused the fire to aggravate, arousing a bitter smell of alcohol and burnt sugar.
The door was flung open, Kaz eyed it, as it was done on purpose. The monstrous roaring caused them all heat, sweat dripping from their forehead and tensed eyebrows.
The carriage man ran away, leaving his carriage behind. It was widespread, and the building had been destroyed. There was nothing they could do about it anymore. It tore through each window, it escaped through each door, burning everything behind. The infamous Crow logo perched on top of the building couldn't be recognized anymore, it was only a trail of ashes. Water, or dust wouldn't help this either. The fire had engulfed them whole.
"Fuck!" Kaz shrieked, feeling a tremor run down his body. Ketterdam was never welcoming to him, and the Crow club was the only building he could call home.
He felt a slight pat on his shoulder, his gaze falling upon Inej's hand which had so gently provided him a little comfort.
"This was-" he stopped his sentence midway. This was the only place he could call home.
The brittle wide streets of Ketterdam bought nothing but blood and vain.
The Crow Club was where it had all begun. Kaz's story hadn't started when he was born, or when Jordie died. It had started here. With Jesper and Inej and Matthias and Nina and Wylan. It had started with his crows.
"I will make you a new home, once this is all built. I will help you" he shuddered at the words that Inej whispered.
Vivi, Lynn, Zephyr and Jesper stepped forward.
"No mourners" Jesper uttered.
"No funerals" they all replied lowly in unison.Daphne watched them through the window in Tante Heleen's office, fists curled up with frustration
"Happy now?!" he snarled disgustedly.Tante simply smiled "Never been happier" she said smoking her hookah
