In the stinky and morbid barrel they all called home, the Bastard of the barrel and his crows were about to plan for another ever epic adventure.
They were gathered together in the dark wooden room, a dim light being their only source of light. Kaz adjusted his leather gloves with an ever-wearing poker face.
The floor in the room squeaked and cracked at every step, and the smell of rotten corpses and dead fish coming from the nearby lanes, criminals lurking at every corner, looking for their next victim.
A huge clock hung right at the center of the wall they were facing, the rest of the wall covered by maps and plans and cracks from every-day fights.
The clock struck 5, and Nina Zenik pulled out a biscuit from the vault.
"All you'll ever do is kill innocent Fjerdians and make evil plans with demjins" Matthias casted a dirty look towards Kaz.
Nina as usual got into a sarcastic banter with Matthias. Kaz held in his breath, exhausted. He casted a quick glance at Inej, with her long braided her, falling at her side, little wisps of her hair out. Kaz couldn't help but want to push them away from her face. He quickly looked away.
Jesper was unusually quiet, Kaz noticed that
"Anything you'd like to tell us, Jesper?" kaz sneered
"What? me? what would I want to say? are you saying you miss my deep velvety, seducing voice?" Jesper smirked at Kaz, casting out a theatrical expression
Nina chimed in "Mr Brekker loves his seductive gunman" she managed to say while chewing two biscuits.
Inej added in "We have about a month left. We either make a plan now or never get hold of the kruge"
She stood up from the crooked stool and pulled out the map from the wall, attentively tracing out locations.
Kaz looked at the little mole near her eye, the way her eyes moved, devouring the intensity, focused and yet so calm. Pools of midnight reflection and celestial bodies. Eyes that held secrets he might never know.
Jesper nudged Kaz lightly and winked at him, causing kaz to give him an awful glare. He was just about to say something as he heard the loud and familiar thud.
Someone's shot.
Kaz stared at Jesper so very calmly, that it was terrifying.
"Ooh, threatening face." Nina murmured to Inej. "Definitely" Inej nodded, a faint smile on her lips.
Jesper was bracing to defend himself. When the door to the room they were scheming in, flung open revealing Wylan.
Wylan's eyes scanned the room, stopping at Jesper. His reddish golden locks were a mess, dirt smothered over his cheeks and the tip of his nose. He glared at the Zemeni boy who visibly gulped.
"Jesper, there is a ravkan man looking for you." Wylan said, "You lot must have heard the gunshots. He doesn't seem very pleased."
Jesper cursed under his breath.
"And he shot all my test tubes. The test tubes with the chemicals I had been working extra carefully with as the ingredients were incredibly rare." Wylan shouted the last bit, looking pissed and annoyed.
Jesper cursed again, looking at Kaz for help, but Kaz simple shrugged giving him a 'you are on your own' look.
"Merchling, you know what's even rarer than those ingredients?" Jesper said in a weak attempt only earning a bored look from Wylan.
"My love for you!" Jesper exclaimed, opening his arms dramatically. Matthias snorted.
Wylan flushed scarlet, shaking his head at the boy who flashed one of his charming grins at his partner.
Another loud gunshot rang out.
"See you all, later!" Jesper shouted as he he gave a quick peck to Wylan on his cheek and dashed out for one of the backdoors of the Barrell.
Unfortunately for Jesper, the ravkan man had spotted him and started chasing after him, sending Ravkan curses flying at the sharpshooter. Jesper ran pretty fast thanks to his long legs that he always flaunted. He sneaked a glance behind him to see the furious ravkan catching up to him.
Jesper loved making mischief, which in turn always landed him in trouble. This was why he had stolen a coat from the expensive ravkan store. He had enough money but it but of course he didn't. He stole it, instead.
Jesper grabbed his precious revolvers from his leather gunbelt. He turned back, aiming for the strings that was holding a heavy banner that hung above the ravkan shop owner and himself. He looked at the ravkan man, meeting his enraged gaze and winked at him. He shot right at the strings that sent the heavy velvet banner plummet down right on top of the shop owner, making him trip on it.
Jesper let out a laugh as he turned forward to disappear before the ravkan recovered from his fall, only to bump roughly into two girls.
