CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
in secret.

Sliding into the front passenger seat, Renjun swiftly ran his fingers through his dark locks and sunk into the leather cushions of his car. He sighed contently, as if like a teenager after their first date and having scored his first kiss. However, his first kiss was with another woman, they were in front of a high school and that was barely a kiss as counted by Renjun.

Donghyuck side-eyes his boss, wary to speak at first. He didn't know if he wanted to ruin his little moment of tranquility and contentment, but, who was he kidding? This romanticized marriage life that the male had somehow conjured up in the span of a couple months began to become too real— and it was  a much needed topic that needed to be addressed. Especially if Renjun would just end up loving the impossibility of him and Hwa Young instead of the woman herself.

"Are you gonna tell her?" The Lee asked monotonously, starting up the engine and returning his gaze upon the road ahead. From the corner of his peripheral vision, he saw him sit up— struck out of his hypnotized trance.

Renjun's head whipped to the left. "What?" He asked, questioning the hidden intentions of his secretary who's tone was unreadable to all.

"Are you gonna tell her?" Donghyuck said again, driving out off of the high school's property. The brunette glanced to his right briefly, and as he saw the confused expression of the man's face, he clarified. Though he knew Renjun had gotten what he was getting at. It was clear how his eyes turned into a blur, and like him, himself, the lines of his book became smudged ink. "That you love her still,"

At first Renjun hesitated. He turned his vision forward, and thought quietly in his seat as the bustling streets of the city passed by his windows. Finally, some form of conclusion was made. And though he was still unsure of his plans, he spoke firmly. "I was thinking about Christmas, seems like the perfect time,"

That wasn't the exact response Donghyuck wanted, but he knew. Out of everyone in South Korea, Renjun was the last person to be controlled. "Don't go breaking your heart," Was the only thing he could offer in the moment, knowing any other words would become dull to his ears.

"I know," He answered with the same tone the Lee had started with.

Donghyuck shook his head and chuckled. There were those walls again. "Don't need high school to repeat,"

"Nothing happened in high school," The other huffed, puffing out his cheeks.

"Exactly. You both said I love you, yet nothing happened," The brunette stated the obvious. From all those nights Renjun had found himself too drunk to function at a random bar in the country, Donghyuck was always called to pick him up. And for the however long it took them to get back to the other's penthouse, he'd retell his high school experience over and over again.

Young Huang Renjun and Kwon Hwa Young were stolen locker kisses, meet ups in empty classrooms and under the bleachers, small un-labeled dates in the back corner of the library, extra long, unnoticeable stares, and brushes of the back of their hand with the other.

In all, they loved in secret. Perhaps showing it off, and labeling it something more than just best friends would make it too real for them. The answer to why they didn't love aloud as they should have was still unanswered. Every time Donghyuck would ask, it would be the same answer. "It wasn't our time," was what repeated over and over again.

He was wondering at what point will he explain it besides just one sentence and four words.

"We were just kids," Renjun uttered, looking distantly out of his side window.

"Saying adult words," Donghyuck snickered.

The Huang rolled his eyes. "Well we're old enough to fully understand now," He grumbled quietly.

"Maybe you, does she return your feelings?" The air became dense after that, and none of them dared to speak another word— perhaps to plagued by the impossibilities being outweighed by realism.
